Grades? Well that depends on the situation and course. In elemtary and junior high I was wheverever. In highschool I was an overachiever, top ten percent of class, state scholar, etc. In college- well I graduated undergrad with a 3.01 I got mostly As and some Bs in my english and writing courses. Science and math classes- I ended up just happy to pass them. I guess I got mostly Bs in my psych classes. It depended on my health that semester and the times the classes were and some other factors.

I have taken one graduate course so far- I got an A in that.

In high school, I graduated fifth in my class and got a Bank of America Award in the field of English.

In college, I got a 3.25 average and a 3.09 average in graduate school.

How do you get more than a 4.0? Is there really that much grade inflation that they need to up the scale to 5.0? And does that really say anything different than getting a 3.41, all things considered?

Some school districts give honors classes a 1 point boost on the GPA scale, meaning that if you some how incredibly got all honors classes then you'd have a 5.0. I am not sure if it is a way to deal with grade inflation or a way to make sure that one cannot become a valedictorian through only taking easy classes. It tends to say something different as it shows that the individual does better in school than the 3.41 person does. I know my school district worked that way and Tim_Tex's district might have a similar system as I'd bet that his high school was also in Texas.

Exactly. In my school district extra grade points are an incentive to take honors, AP, or IB courses. If you are in an Honors course, an A gets you a 5.0 for that class. If you are in AP or IB courses, an A gets you a 6.0 for that class.

Because of this GPA "weighting", my GPA came out to be 4.20 on my transcript. If there were no weighting system in use, that same GPA would be 3.52. In actuality, it should be a tenth of a point or so higher because the administration made quite a few mistakes on my transcript.

I never thought about the theory you pose about valedictorians, but it makes sense.

Really, your school district works differently than mine. That system would have likely worked to my benefit though as that would have made my GPA .3 points higher.

The incentive one is probably closer to it though and the fact that they didn't want kids to choose between academic excellence and GPA. The reason I said valedictorian, although it applies to all ranks, is because some kids take those things very seriously.

I went to Klein High School in Spring, Texas. I remember them switching to a 5.0 grade scale because there were so many people trying to get in the top 10% of the class to take advantage of some college tuition/acceptance thing. I know they gave extra points to kids taking AP/concurrent enrollment classes, but it still didn't makes sense. I think that it is a type of inflation "control."

Really!! Interesting. I never knew about that. My school had a 5.0 since before I or my older brother had gotten in. Still, I don't think you ever told me you were a Texan.... not that my memory is the best anyway. This is just more proof in my catalog of things proving that Texans are the master race!! Yeah, I am in a weird mood!
