When I went back to finish my degree I didn't socialize with the other students, and it wasn't weird. As a re-entry student people assumed I had a life <grin>, and school was just school.
I got adopted by an Iranian study group, though, and that was a lot of fun. They had a full range of language skills, so I would work through the problems with the ones that spoke more English, and then they would go through them again in Farsi. Being a different culture, nonverbal cue errors didn't seem weird, we were working on specific talks, and the range of content was narrowly constrained. After awhile I could follow the Farsi explanations and make corrections, without knowing any Farsi.
