Anyone here good at sorting laundry (colors/fabric types)? Plus, in general how do you know if you can just throw all your stuff into one load? (Ironically my mother is a sorting, folding laundry nut but I don't get it! 8O)

I'll give you an example:

1. white linen type shirt & cami (was just gonna stick it w/ underwear)
2. Underwear & socks, etc.
3. brightly colored shirts (blues, greens, pinks, etc.)
4. rainbow and/or blue swirly colored skirts
5. loose fabric pants/including gauchos (very light tan/yellow, dark green, brown, &/or black)
6. jeans (I assume they go w/ everything safely)?
7. workout clothes (tanks, tight shorts or pants)
8. pajamas
9. new items (yellow OK w/ other stuff/won't bleed?)

Can all this stuff go together if its been worn before? I was told you need to be careful with new stuff. Funny, I can get my work organized but do not know how to do a load of wash!

Most important thing is to wash new colour things away from whites for the first few washes.

I just split everything into two: whites + light colors that I wash with warm water, and other colors under cold water.. though splitting it into 3 would probably better. I'm a guy so I don't have any "delicates" aside from some frilly floor towels and some sweaters - those always go cold, on one of the shorter, gentler cycles, and inside those laundry net bag thingies.

When I first got married, I didn't always see the point of separating laundry, either. My husband had to do it or I'd just toss everything in together.

Generally, it's by light colors (white, beige, khaki, pastels), dark colors (black, brown, navy blue, dark gray, etc.) and bright colors. The idea is that whites can usually be washed in hot water, but colors will fade in hot, so they need to be in either warm or cold. I usually just wash everything in cold, though.

If you have enough bright colors of one kind, put them in one load together, like a load of reds and a load of yellows. That way if any of the dyes run it won't be a huge tragedy as it might be if you had tossed a white (but now kind of off-pink) sweater in with the red blouses.

Towels and sheets can be washed together, generally, or you can toss towels in with any other cotton items like T-shirts.

Finally, before you wash anything, look at the tags. There are usually washing instructions there and they will tell you if special care is needed.

My school's laundry room has washers w/ hot water in the beginning & I think it cools later on in the wash, my options are basically whites, colors, whites & colors (dryer), perm. press, woolen (washer), & delicate(s). Man, the school machines seem slow.

As a rule....

Light colors
Dark colors

For lights, if you're doing bed linen and pillow cases, do those separately from regular clothes because they dry a lot faster than heavier fabrics (not to mention they tend to easily make a load by themselves).

Towels can be washed with other clothes, but they tend to be heavy so you might want to do them by themselves as well...especially if you are doing a enough to make a whole load.

I don't care for clothes that need "special cleaning" requirements like using the gentle cycle. That means special sorting that I'd rather not mess with.

I just wash clothes in one wash, and towels in one wash.

I mix whites and colors, and never had any problems.

Lights and darks. I never have enough to make an entire load all by themselves. besides, i never even really fold my clothes, why waste time separating them? It's too much of a chore...
