I just wanted to ask did/do you have an aid in school and have any interesting stories to share?

My mother told me about a year ago that the first year i had an aid in school, which would've been 2nd grade, there were parents complaining. Word had spread, that a student (being me) had an aid in class and the parents of the students felt that was unfair. There was a meeting one night to discuss this, in which my mother attended, and she could hardly hold back the tears, as some of the parents were just bashing the student, being me. I wasn't even there! Anyway, when the meeting ended, the principal went up to my mom and said "We're sorry. We can hold another meeting if you want. If there is anything we can do..." but my mom plainly took it as it is and we moved on.

Anyway, I had an aid in class with me through 12th grade. Although, I started showing signs of independence in 11th grade. So, help slowly drifted off during 12th.

I didn't, I had the odd one in certain lessons for short periods of time until they realised I didn't want them. Except for PE though when the mentor said she didn't need to be there because people weren't bullying me and I was doing fine, but that was because she was there! It all went back to square one as soon as she stopped coming to lessons.
Most of the experiences I've had of mentors are my friend's, and they always ended up being the annoying, patronising ones. They weren't my mentor but still treated me like they were. The last one was the worst, near the end of year 10 me and my friend had a go at her and told her that we felt patronised and held back, she didn't listen and called us rude, they never do listen they just think they're doing the right thing and breath down your neck but when you want to tell them how you feel about the situation they just shrug it off like you're an idiot who doesn't know what you're talking about. So later that day me and my friend skived 5th lesson in protest and hid somewhere and at the last lesson they found us and wouldn't listen when we tried to tell them what was wrong.

The school district made me have an aide - they had some other term for the position, though, which eludes me - in eighth grade. I remember that I told her early on that I didn't need her help and I could function perfectly independently, with no regard to how rude that statement sounds.

Essentially, I had come to "normal" middle school from a - for lack of a better term - "special" school, and they thought I would be unable to function. What they never realized is that the few behavioral incidents I had in middle school were all their creation, because they denied me mainstream classes for a couple of months, or because they put me into a "resource room" instead of normal classes.

They were considering having her stay for ninth grade, without thinking of the embarrassment it would have caused to enter honors-level classes followed by an aide. I don't know who pulled the strings for that to end. I could function perfectly well in ninth grade - the final hurdle was (and still is) relating to people my own age.

I didn't. I didn't have any form of help in school until I was in 3rd Grade/Primary 3, in fact. Sigh.

It was written in my IEP that I was to have one but the school didn't want to pay for one. They wanted to put me in a school for emotional disturbed kids because they thought I was a danger to the other children. I was only a danger because they were a danger to me. I was only trying to defend myself from the bullying but I was veiwed as the bully.

I had an aid until grade 6, though as I got older I got help with less stuff. I had no help whatsoever in grade 7 and 8 (horrible two years), and now I have a resource period, extended time, and photocopied notes so I can cope better.

All my school life. But I did alternate between my mainstream primary school and my "special" (lesigh) primary, where I didn't have support as all the kids had autism to varying degrees. I was actually one of the cleverest at that school (I took my SATs in Year 5 there), but my EQ has always been very low.

Even now I still have a mentor, but can go out to buy lunch and stuff on my own.

I didn't get a diagnosis until aged 20 so I never got any help. It would've been great if I had, and maybe even been in seperate classes.

I wasn't diagnosed then so no, I didn't. Even if I was diagnosed I wouldn't have needed one because academically I wasn't struggling.

I was in a learning center period class where I had help with some homework and I was also in lower level Math classes that had teacher's aides so I did get a little help. I however never had any actual aides with me like a few kids did.

I had a special person with whom I talked once every time, and helped me out some times. It also made it easier too handle certain situations just being able to talk about it. Which I don't really do at home, as I tried to keep school and home separated (homework = ).

Also my teachers and mentor knew of it, that made it easier.

I mainly had a teacher aid in Yr 11 and then again it was because I had problems with note taking for certain classes because I also have hand tremors. Once I got my laptop though I could basically do it myself.
