Are any of you nerds or used to be nerds as in you care more about school marks than your social life? I for one used to be a huge nerd...nothing else matters to me aside from school marks. Now in university, i'm starting to see the importance of making friendships as it gets boring if you have few friends.

I would rather have books and information to absorb than deal with most people. I can go from the latest literary fiction to being deep in a programming guide. Information is interesting -- most people are not. I cannot tolerate noises, odors, lights, etc, so clubs and bars were never my thing. My one common interest with peers was attending football games and analyzing the plays and stats. Still, I was not following "our team" so much as the general play of the game.

Books are almost like friends, for me. Some editions I have had since elementary school (Poe, Hugo) when I picked them up used. I didn't understand them, but I was intrigued.

i never liked reading advanced level books, maybe ones that i've seen the movie for like Around the World in 80 Days. Still, watching the movie is more interesting.

It was never really about the grades, it's all about the information. I just want to know everything! But I am learning that there some pretty amazing things out there that I can't get in books-- I have to interact with people for them. It's worth it, though, for the learning. And I've met some neat people in the process.

It might not be true for everyone, but I'm pretty sure that being a nerd or a geek is qualification for the diagnosis of AS
I've gotten better and making and keeping friends but I would still prefer to research something in its entirety via books, internet, and documentaries/movies.

I must be, given that some of my friends call me "Hermione" on a regular basis. I don't have the caring about grades thing, though, just a vacuum-cleaner approach to knowledge.

Kind of hard to imagine you can be an aspie and not be a nerd...

Im also an addict of information (granted, its within a narrow interest range). Was called a nerd often, though mainly due to my hunger for sci-fi writings and Magic: The Gathering (played this in my last few years of high school and then some).

What an incredibly nice way of describing a way of learning. I think I know how and why to explain this to professors now.

I got that "vaccum cleaner" thing too. I don't think it's coming from aspie though. It's a thing called "intellectual overexcitabilitie". It's generally come from a high intelligence. (still possible to have it without being really intelligent though. (like me... :( )) http://giftedkids.about.com/od/gifted101/qt/intellectual_oe.htm

Intellectual overexcitalibilitie = Want to learn everyhting

Aspie interest= Want to learn everything about one subject

Intellectual overexcitalibilitie + Aspie interest = Want to learn everyting + Want to learn everything about one subject = Want to learn everything

Also, not all aspies are nerd, and not all nerd are aspies.

Yeah, I am a big nerd. I love seeing those high marks and the occasional "good job" written on my work. 8)

I'm addicted to reading, writing, and collecting. These three things are my stress relievers. Dealing with people is going outside my comfort zone. It's beneficial to my self-development and I know that I have to do it, but it's not something that I absolutely need. Only if those people are tied to my special interest in any way, I will willingly spend time with them. It's harder with people, though, because sometimes they give you the impression that they want to engage themselves in a coversation about my interests but then they never actually end up participating and contributing in a way that I could learn something new from them.

But yeah, I guess I'm a nerd. I learn mostly about a restricted subject area, so I think that makes me more of a geek than a nerd. :nerdy:
