I'm curious to know if anyone here was allowed an early graduation in high school and, if so, what were the requirements? I have seriously been considering bringing this option up to my guidance counselor, though I'm afraid she'll shoot it down like all of my other ideas. -_-; As of right now I have taken all required classes and currently have the minimum amount of credits need to graduate. (27 credits are needed I have 27.8 credits) None of the classes this term are required and are simply nonsense classes to keep me in school. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? =/

I think you would probably need to bring in a parent to fight for this so you would need to convince your parents first. I have suggested though that you request that the district pay for you to take courses at a local community college if you have enough credits to graduate. May districts do so today and it would allow the district to keep you on the roles as a student (for money) and you can get rid of the required classes for gree.

I second the previous comment that you should bring your parents in with you to help you in this endeavor to finish high school early. Having said that, I think that leaving high school early, if you are done with required courses, would be a good idea. We actually were ready to have our son do this (years ago) because we felt he would do better in a college environment than in a high school one. He ultimately ended up NOT graduating early (we moved back to his old high school, where he had friends and didn't want to leave), but in our previous situation, it would have been a very good idea.

Go for it!

My mother was actually the one to suggest it first to me on a discussion to my workplace. Unfortunately the school I go to is very small and I'm one of the few (if not the first) students with AS that go through it, so their mindset is mostly 'It's just cause she's looking for attention/being stupid' kind of thing... I wouldn't mind going to a nearby community college for my core classes, but I would have no transportation there and the school would definitely not provide it. That's why I'm thinking of just trying for early graduation to leave high school all together and getting all my things together for college. Plus I have no friends here cause everyone's all clique-y. -_-;

Also, if we could convince him, my psychiatrist might be able to help push in this movement. We're having a team meeting sometime this month to go over my 504 since it wasn't followed last term and to add some new clauses to it. >< Depending on if we think we could win the battle he might help as well.

School completion topic

My son just finished high school on January 28th, 2010 with 30 credits needed. He finished early because he took summer school courses (his idea).

A person is awarded a high school diploma based on taking required courses and accumulating credits. This is not based on age.

Just beware that college, although usually better than high school with respect to acceptance of more diverse social situations, is not immune to cliques.

I didn't finish high school early, I took the four years, but graduated at 16 and had started taking college-level courses at the community college and at a regular 4-year school during my junior (third) year. Even then, in retrospect I was socially way out of my league when I started my first official year as a college student... although I'm not sure if there was any way around that and learn the social skills, other than to slog right through it.

I am a parent of a high school junior. I am also recommending to him to leave high school early. He has AS, with no friends and is a target. Depending on your state, there might be an equivalency exam like here in Calif. it is called the California High School Profiency Exam (CHSPE) which if passed is equivalent to the high school dipoma.
and Go straight to Comm. college. good luck.

I wish I could graduate early. The graduating ceremony is going to cause me anxiety because there's going to be so many people there and it's going to be really emotional. I'd rather just be given my diploma with no ceremony and be sent on my way. It would take a load off my shoulders.
