We are looking to move to Travis County (Austin, Texas) and are uncertain of what can be offered to our sons as far as education goes. Looking online doesn't help much, as the public schools typically describe themselves in amazing and wonderful ways without actually telling you anything, and, all the "helpful link websites" are full of information that doesn't enlighten us either. (Our oldest is 13 with Aspgergers, the 10 year old is ASD).

Currently, the oldest is in an amazing "sub-school" which houses ALL the children with Emotional Disabilities, and they are offered vocational training, emotional skills, music therapy, and are even able to stay in high school until they are 22 if necessary. The oldest has an intense IEP, the younger has a 504 (which probably needs to be converted to an IEP!).

I'm very nervous about switching to a new school district and don't want my kids merely stuffed away in an ED classroom. Can any parents offer me advice/stories on what is available in Travis County? Where exactly should we go, and why do they think so?

I am in Harris County, but I used to live in Hays County, just south of Travis.

Although I've been to Austin, Texas a couple times, I couldn't tell you about the nature of the education system there.

I suggest you visit the website city-data.com. It has all kinds of stats regarding the different cities and counties of each state in the country. Also, there's a forum on that site where you can ask specific questions about the cities you're interested in. Hope I helped. :)
