How does this affect you all in lectures?

I got into the habit of falling asleep, then stopped going altogether and failed all my classes. This happened 11 years ago and I don't regret it. Because it also happened 14 years ago at another college.

Study the subject of the class before the class (that helps). Or take notes and study it later. Well that is what I do. I hated when the teachers asked questions to me and I had no idea of the answer!

I find that I am a very fast note taker, but when it comes to understanding the material I either get or I don't. There's no in between.

I find it hard to listen and write notes at the same time, so my IEP allows me to get the notes and I can reread the information that I listened to at my own pace.

That's the reason that I didn't take regular college courses.

this must be at least partly why I get next to nothing out of lectures

When I still had lectures I used to be fine at the start, but my mind would feel full after 30 - 60 minutes.

I am a star student when all I have to do is listen, take notes, and read texts. But if I'm in a class where we have lecture interspersed with problem solving, like math or foreign language or certain computer classes, it's really hard for me to pay attention. It's like a barrage.

You may also be able to get permission to take a laptop to class to type your notes.

At first I was falling asleep in my lectures. Then I started taking some ritalin that was prescribed to me. Now I stay awake, but I hardly process anything they say because they go over their powerpoints so quickly. So far though college I've just attended lecture but done my actual learning/studying/note taking on my own, at home. I'm going to a new college this semester and I'm not sure if I want to get a tape recorder or just keep doing what I've been doing.

class is pointless for me. I go in to see teachers individually or learn it from a book or notes the teacher prepares and hands out

There is some speculation that many people with AS, though they had no language delays and can understand language, process it in such a way that under some situations they may be able to understand the word but may be slow to process them into any relevant form of information.

There is a device called a Pulse Smartpen. It is a pen which is used with a special notebook. The pen simultaneously records audio and the visual of what is being written in the notebook. The audio can be played back by tapping any point in the notebook you which to hear what was said at, and when the data is uploaded to a computer you can play back both what was being said and written simultaneously. You can control the speed of the playback.

You can request a note taker to write with it in class.

I don't know if its the processing, but my attention span is terrible. But it was also suggested that I have NVLD. I just don't go to lectures unless they make me. If they do , I usually just sign in and than play with my phone the whole time. I process written information much better and since most instructors post their PPs online now days, I just read them. I've actually performed at the top of many classes without going or going and not paying attention to the lectures.

I have a dicatphone and sonocent note taking software, which means I can download the lecture slides onto my laptop, record the audio/lecturer speaking and type notes alongside the slides. I still don't actually take very many notes, if at all but when I do it helps typing them as opposed to trying to write them. If I do happen to type some notes during the lecture, I don't have to worry so much about keeping up because the software is recording the audio in easy to see chunks right next to the slides I've downloaded.
