Ok, so here is the situation. My brother is currently looking for work but if he can't find work, he is planning to go to university in the fall (as a grad student). The thing is that he doesn't have a place to stay until september 20th so he'll need accomodation for a week or so.

I happen to be going to school at the same university and my parents told me to let my brother stay at my place. The problem is that it is against the housing rules to let a guest stay for more than 48 hours per week (something like that). But its not just my brother who will get in trouble if he gets caught. I will also get in trouble and perhaps get kicked out as well. I decided not to let that happen but I am too nervous to talk with my parents about it. There is no way to convince them that I shouldn't be breaking the rules. My parents say "he is your brother, you MUST let him stay (even if it means breaking the rules)".

However, I have sent an email to the person in charge of residence to explain the situation, and you know what?...The truth never hurts too much. I don't know how the person will reply back but its always good to tell the truth and be transparent. Perhaps the person can help my brother find accomodation. I'm kinda disappointed in my parents for encouraging their own two sons to break the rules.

That's WRONG and what if you get kicked out?! Then you/brother will be living with mom/dad!! ! SHEESH! Hopefully the school can understand it's only for about a month so perhaps THEY can bend the rules. But parents thanking you should break the rules and RISK getting kicked out that's AWFUL!! !! ! Hopefully the school people reply and are understanding of your brothers situation (it's only for about a month) and surely he'd do his part clean and clean his messes not make a racket/be loud etc. I'd say YES if I was the school. Hopefully things go well. :-)

Thanks. I guess my parents are thinking (and anticipating) that we will not get caught. Anyway, its a week and an additional 2 days when my brother needs to go there for TA training.

You made the right call in communicating with the housing department; a week should not be so burdensome in the grand scheme of things. In this scenario, I would say, yeah, you do know better than your parents. :D

Now, another concern - is there a roommate involved, besides your brother who will be a short-timer?

Good luck! :D

Yeah but I don't know how many other people are in the house. I think the house has a capacity of 5 people max.

My brother said that its hard to find housing without commitment (he doesn't know if he will work or study). The place he will be living in starting september 20th is a friend's place (which is all legit since he will be paying rent).

So the person emailed back and said my brother could stay. Now, the next thing I hope for is that he finds a job, that way I don't need to live in the same house as him.
