I got assigned a group work team for all my subjects this semester. I hate group work with a passion and i am getting my formal dx so next semester, university policy says that i don't have to have a group. :D

Well my group sucks. I have done all the work so far and they will just pop on occasionally and sponge off of me. Well whatever. We have an assignment coming up soon where i will have to be the speaker in a 10 minute oral presentation (my other group members weaseled out of it). I really don't care. I can do a talk for 10 minutes, i just have to be very prepared.

Now one member of my group has decided that we should split the topic in 3 and we each focus on one area. This would be fine in theory except i still have to give the talk on everything and it will fall on my shoulders if they haven't pulled their weight and i will look bad.

I told them NO! We will each cover everything so then we can have different perspectives on everything and we can cover all bases for the assignment. They said NO! (Obviously they want to slack off and do minimal work). So I said, I don't care what you think. I refuse to put my grades in your hands when you have been less then switched on so far. If you don't like it go and whine to the professors. Having sciatic nerve trouble or cealiacs does not exempt you from being able to talk in front of a crowd.

They told me to F*** O**! I told them that if they can't manage a first year assignment, they may as well drop out now because in a hospital, you have peoples lives depending on you and if they can't be bothered learning the basics, they will never get hired.

I feel so much better. :D

I'm proud of you for what you did. I wish I had the guts to do that. :)

A speech I said in my head a hundred times during school years. Kudos to you for standing up for yourself.

I'm the opposite; I prefer to make everyone do a bit each because it then clearly shows when they don't do their work. Making everyone do everything just allows the lazy ones to do nothing and then leech onto other people's work at the end. It's a pet hate of mine too.

One way to get around this is to get everyone to stand up and do their speech about their little bit in the project. That can backfire because the really sneaky ones will just go on and cover your part if you don't speak first.

(here's a link to a thread of mine where I was in a similar situation with ... let's say, not my choice of workmates)

Unfortunately, this is a group project so the majority usually wins out. You can't expect people to do things your way just because you want it that way. By all means, suggest it, but if they say no, you need to find a way to work around it.

I'm not sure if that is true for all situations, but where I'm from, the speaker's name goes first on the title slide, and the person who did the most work puts their name last. It's petty but it may make you feel better.

Also, a word of caution; if you're in first year, you're going to be stuck with these people for a number of years. For the sake of a project, it's not worth insulting them and making enemies. This applies even more so if you're heading into a medical career; I can't emphasize how little your grades count in the long run compared to your ability to work well with others and trust your colleagues.
