Alright, so my mother and I were talking to eachother about potential things that would help me out in college and even work. I am a person who has been diagnosed with Asperger's(ASD)/ADHD/Borderline Personality Disorder/Depression/and Anxiety. if that gives any idea of the types of issues I have.

So we've already looked into the iPad as a possible option for something we'd look into getting for me to help me in my college classes. However, there has been something I've had trouble dealing with in my previous attempts at college, and that's been the ability (or lack thereof) to lock out everything but what is necessary for me to hear. This may not be nearly as important in a lecture environment, as normally there is only one person speaking at a time, though some of the side conversations can be bothersome. This is more in regard to my past work history. As I may be working part time as well as going to college.

The thing I worry most is in my past jobs, i've had trouble with everything going on, hearing the important things. Like instructions, orders, and those of similar nature. As I've said, I have a problem picking out sounds that I need to hear. One such instance was while I was working at a fast food place. I can't hear the intercom with all the grills/fryers people taking orders in the front, and everything else going on. The Intercom just gets drowned out to me, and I can't pick out anything. So I was thinking if this was even a possibility, that it'd be great!

So the idea is, a sort of headset that allows you to kill the unnecessary sounds. Which also would allow employers, fellow employees, and things like the intercom to go directly to my ear, while aso locking out the sounds around me so I can work more efficiently. As to how it would be possible, I haven't a clue. It's not like it's not possible. Though in reality it may be seen as an inconvenience in the eyes of the employers or employees. But I have to say it would be nice for me though, so i can be more of an effective worker. Any thoughts?

Yea, I think they have that.
Like on an airplane, they have noise reduction headphones that block out all sounds aside from your music.
You'd have to get those, and somehow hook it up to direct line that they can talk to you at.

Or you could just learn sign language.................just sayin.

I have a similar problem in lecture. Usually I just sit there and fidget. The real learning happens when I'm on my own reading the textbook. Honestly I don't even go to most classes, just the exams. There's no point in showing up, as I'm about as perceptive as a doorknob in lectures.

Noise cancelling headphones are really helpful because while they cancel noise, you can still hear human voice. They will make voices softer, so there are situations where they wouldn't help you. I have the Bose headphones and they do exactly what they're supposed to do.

I once conceptualised a personal silence field projector. If anyone makes it, I wants royalties. :P

I don't know much about those, but just thought I would give you a suggestion about your lectures (if the side conversations become too much). A lot of people at my school (get permission first though!) record the lecture from start to finish so they can listen to it privately later. Might help if surrounding noises are becoming an issue for you there.

they seem simple enough to make, just take some noise-canceling headphones and wire them with mini-speakers. and as for the professors voice, some places already have the teachers use a microphone, so you can just tune into that!
