I am currently in college but I doubt I will have any chance of getting a degree if I don't somehow learn how to do math...I have no idea how I graduated highschool and got into college when I have 5th grade math skills. I was a bit below average at math up until that point and then anything beyond that I can't seem to get the concept of. I seem to be able to remember how to do some equations and stuff for short lenghts of time but for whatever reason none of it has sank in....at this point I have no idea how I would go about attemting algebra. I could not even pass a remedial math course in college with tutoring. Does anyone else have an issue with a specific subject like that and is there any way to get a degree without passing math courses?

There are private art schools that don't usually require math but for most non-science majors, you just need to do statistics and the pre-requisits, which are usually algebra courses.

I can help you if you like.

Were there any specific things you struggled with that I might be able to explain?

You wont get an AA or BA or higher degree without having to take math courses. Its required in all US universities. As an above poster said there might be a few that dont require them but I think that would be for stuff like dance or such arts.

I was a straight C student in math all through elementary, middle and high school. To this day I really can't handle basic algebra... that stuff just doesnt stick in my head past the 'find the value of X' level algebra.

In college I took college math twice (first time F second time a C grade) and trigonometry (which amazingly was easier since its mostly visual and calculator stuff.. .i may suck at math but i do understand stuff I can see happening and I can certainly use a calculator... that class was like geometry on crack)...which I passed also with a C. That was enough to get my AA to transfer to a univ. (where my majors have no math classes.. YAY!).

To pass the math classes I spent one semester between the failed college math and between the passed college math and taking the trigonometry class in tutoring sessions at the college.

Your college should have free tutoring available.. ive not heard of a college without this. Take advantage of it.

One thing you need to be aware of though: If you entered the college with a lower than required math score then you are taking the 'preparation' classes which literally try to cram all of high school math into a semester. Those classes are HARD as hell. I took the CPT (college placement exam.. i never took the SAT) three times to get a passing math score so I would not get stuck in those classes.

Yeah I can't really do algebra, I mean I have had it explained many times, even when I was in tutoring at the first college I went to trying to pass remedial math which I ended up not passing. But yeah I don't think I'll going to any private art schools as I don't really have any skills ot get into one and probably could not afford it. But yeah if one on one tutoring does not even help what else is there to do?

Well yeah I could not even pass that the preparation class...but yeah that's the thing I don't see how I am going to pass a math class in college just by trying to do more tutoring or taking the class more then once because I can't seem to actually learn it.

The problem with most math tutors...and most math teachers, is that they never struggled with math so they don't know how to explain things to someone who might have a math based learning disability like some form of dyscalculia.

I, on the other hand, struggled immensely with math, but still managed to get a degree in it.

I highly recommend for you to have a look at Khan Academy.
It's free and of exceptional quality.
It might seem only to be aimed at lower Key stages at first glance, but please have a look at their page Watch, which lists all their instructional videos.

Please, please give it a try!
I am working through it myself right now with my son, who was screaming and shouting the first few times (he hates math, because he does not understand the way they teach it at school), but I did not give up and forced him to try a few sessions, at the weekend he came running downstairs. switched on the laptop and was very determined to earn himself another "Moon Badge" ( you will see, ).

I have issues with every college subject you could possibly take. Math, though, has to be the hardest subject of them all. It's weird, because I can do complex math problems if they don't come from textbooks (for example, some video games have challenging math problems you must solve in order to continue the story).

As for how to get around math, I don't think you can, since most degrees require you to pass algebra and/or trigonometry. Guess it all depends on what your degree is. Maybe you could get a tutor to help explain math to you in a way that makes sense?

This sounds like something I posted before!! !! ! 8O 8O O.M.G. Deja vu!

I just failed the remedial math course at the university I'm attending last semester...and I had tutoring too.

I suck at math so horribly. I've been brought to tears during and after math exams my entire life. There is nothing I've come to hate more in this world than math and numbers. :wall: :skull: :pale:

I have absolutely no advice to give, I don't even know what to do myself. The only thing I can say is don't drop out yet and keep trying. That's what I'm going to do. I hope it works.

I tried that, the tutoring made no difference whatsoever....and on top of that thanks to PTSD math makes me even more anxious because of an incident when I was in 10th where a student got shot started out as a lock down when I was in math class....so being in a math class even in a college setting causes a lot of anxiety. I am not trying to make anything up it really does make it 10 times more frusterating because most people don't understand how math would be a PTSD trigger.
