I was doing Psychology in the past at a Community College and made it a "special interest" before I knew of AS or anything about special interest. My parents said it's all I thought about/talked about. An Aspie thing looking back on it. I was out of college but am now back so YA! BUT my parents don't want me doing psychology since I was obsessive. THEY HATE my obsessive behavior. I still find Psychology interesting. NOT You have Autism (X disorder therapy) more of understanding behavior in general. I am only at the AA level (Will be finished Spring 2012) and mention the following ideas to a professor.

Black Friday shoppers (You know the guy who trampled you to get that HDTV a study on HIM). OR why you dislike your husband of 10 years and so you wouldn't have married him my research would look at WHY do you suddenly feel this way WHAT CHANGED?? The professor was stunned Dr. Flota he was like "Wow you should do reserach now!!" I was flattered. Sure I can think of other ideas those are the main 2 that run through my mind. BOTH are Psychology based! BUT my parents are DEAD SET on NO Psychology. I got by this by doing Sociology it still looks at behavior but on a society level and I did a social problems course very fascinating discussion took place in it.

I've only looked at Psychology Bachelors and I need a B in Statistics DONE and would need to take Developmental Psych. Sadly my parents are of that mindset NO Psychology so I'm at a lost!! !! They've suggested Criminal Justice or Law I've questioned personally Crimonologist but I don't think my above ideas fit into any Crime/Law field. I'm at a loss.

Hope someone can help me because at this rate I'll have an AA in Spring 2012 and no idea where to go afterwards!

Show them some material about special interests and Aspies - and how they SHOULD use their special interest in their studies and their jobs. I am sure - with your research skills - you could find some good references, but try Tony Attwood for one. There are plenty of other references on the web about Aspies, special interests, and their value in employment and careers.

Really, trying to cut you off from your special interest is trying to cut you off from your prime motivation to excel. Look at the YouTube video of Clay Marzo (world class surfer and Aspie) - here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKRIRZEV4B4

Plenty of books say that a special interest should be harnessed, not squashed.

PS: I am an Aspie with a psych degree - and some sociology and criminology. I like your interests.

Are your parents trying to move you towards the Criminal Justice field? I know people who work in that field and they tell me that a psychology degree is as good as a criminal justice degree in actually getting a job (not to mention that the psych majors have more freedom to move career paths).

Your obsessions will make you great in your field, like many other aspies who became great scientists. f**k people* who tell you otherwise.

*Not literally

With your inclinations toward research rather than therapy, I’d say sociology is your best fit.

As others have already mentioned, psychology/sociology are perfect knowledge bases for a career in criminal justice… I doubt it will be possible to obtain a CJ degree without taking more classes in those disciplines.

It’s too bad your parents are being so difficult.

I’d go for the sociology degree if I were you. Err… just don’t talk about specifics with your parents.

Having my obsession as my job has made my career wonderful. I have been at my job over 30 years and It does not feel like work, it feels like fun. I am the senior engineer at my current company. I go to work and get paid to do stuff I would do for free anyways.
Explain it to your parents that if you do what you love, the money will come easily.
Go for the Psychology.

Other fields (listed in alphabetical order) that study human behaviour include: anthropology, criminology/ criminal justice, economics (especially micro-economics), education, marketing (sometimes listed under business administration), neuroscience (sometimes called bio-psychology), and sociology.

Two other options:
(1) Major in psychology, but don't tell your parents.
(2) Major in another field, but also major or minor in psychology. Again, don't tell your parents. (If they somehow find out you are taking a psychology course, simply tell them that you have to as part of your major in ____ [field other than psychology].)

Finally, some other things to consider:

Good luck with whatever you end up studying. :)
