Grade Retention

Hi Chaps

I'm trying to sort out my son who will be going to secondary school in the UK from September can anyone tell me if they have gone for or been forced into 'Grade Retention' (kept back a year or repeating a year). Its not very usual in the UK.

I have reservations so I'm looking for both positive and negative stories. I have posted this on the parenting forum too but I'm interested in the students perspective as well as that of the parent.
