I had to take an incomplete in a class this past spring for two reasons. I was going "autistic" (a term I use to describe when I would not be able to understand anything I was reading or hearing before I was diagnosed) and my car was broken down for 5 weeks and I couldn't get to class. The prof did the incomplete for me, but the catch is that I have to have the class finished by the beginning of December. I have two essays I have to read to write a paper, and I cannot comprehend what I am reading. I have tried the automated readers and they do nothing for me. The only way I can comprehend what is being said is if my daughter reads to me, and she has no time.

So my dilemma is what do I do to finish these two college level essays (which require some research and documentation) when I can't even read the freaking papers?? If go to December, the class turns into an F. I WANT to write the papers. I am frustrated that I can't write the papers. I just want to do them. I like the class too! I have one month.

Hire a different high school kid to read to read the essays to you?

Once you've heard the essays and understood them, can you then re-read the essays with comprehension? I mean, if I've only read something once, I need to be able to dig back into it as I'm writing a paper on it, to organize and verify my writing.

You could try reading them out loud to yourself--I find it helps me comprehend difficult writing if it comes out of my own mouth. When you are both producing and hearing the sound, it activates different parts of the brain than when you are reading silently.

MountainLaurel: I might try that if I can find one who is comfortable pronouncing big words. :) It is something about my daughter's voice that gets me though. Not sure what it is.

Ariel: Tried it. Still does not sink in.

I may just have my daughter do it. It needs to be done.
