How many courses would I need to get A's in to raise my GPA?

I thought about studying abroad for a year in Japan and I would need at least a 3.0 GPA to do this and my current GPA is only 2.72 because I used to hang around pretty shady people, so I would ditch classes all the time and smoke pot, do other drugs and make music with them. Anyway, I digress. I have been really serious about doing well in school and I plan to retake a Humanities 1 class I received an F in for just ditching all the time because I thought it was boring at the time. The teacher I plan to take the class in people mention is an easy A as long as you show up for class and do the work, which I plan to do. My other problem is that I had received F's in both Beginning Piano and Fitness(both courses that I was too late to drop, that I just stopped attending due to boredom). I am fine with replacing my F in Humanities 1 with a higher grade...but I really don't want to retake either Beginning Piano or Fitness to replace those F's. I am wondering if say I just took a few other courses that are easy A's such as Art/Theater Appreciation, History of Music, etc., would earning A's or B's in these courses raise my GPA even though the 2 F's from Beginning Piano and Fitness would remain in my Academic Records? I know how to calculate my GPA and all that, but overall...I am a little ret*d when it comes to calculating all this. Then again, I never enjoyed doing anything that involves numbers. I am more interested in reading, languages and the arts. Anyway, I really want to raise my GPA to at least a 3.0 as soon as possible. Can anyone on here please help me out?

what's the total number of credits you have taken?

6 A's will balance out two F's to a B if the credits in all couses is the same.

The total units I have attempted: 60
The total units I have completed: 51.25
The total grade points I have is: 139.50

It really takes 6 A's just to balance 2 F's???
That seems like bs...so in a sense, an F can bring your grade down more than an A can bring you grade up?
My counselor must not know what he is talking about because he was saying that I would only need a few A's
to boost my GPA up to a 3.0...I am starting to feel like its going to take forever to do this crap...

I also wanted to see if anyone could give me a list of courses that they consider to be easy to earn A's in that are transferable? This situation is causing me a lot of anxiety. I hope people here can help me out with this. :(

Way to appreciate opportunity.

I never said I was going to just up and quit college. Look I am not trying to come across as unappreciative. I have been appreciating the opportunity given to me as a US citizen as I have been going to college and working hard for the past year now. If I didn't care about opportunity I wouldn't be trying to put together a new academic plan for myself.

Thanks this looks really useful. Would total number of attempted credit hours completed be the same thing as the number of units I have completed?
I am assuming so, but that is a new term for me.

I think so, but I have never heard them called "units". Anyway, it means the "value" of the course, usually 3 or 4 credits for a normal course, but can be as few as 1. If that sounds familiar to you, it's probably the same.

The GPA calculation is sum[units*credits]/sum[units]

In words, for each course, you multiple the course units by the credits earned for that course, sum them all up, and divide that number by the total number of units.

For example, if you take 3 four unit courses, and get an A (4 credits), a B (3 credits) and a C (2 credits)...

You have a GPA of [4(4)+4(3)+4(2)]/12 = [16+12+6]/12 = 34/12 = 2.8

If you got B's in all of the courses then your GPA would be 3.0

This is in a system that doesn't have plus and minus letter grades.

Only way to truly improve that GPA quickly is to re-take those classes under grade forgiveness.

If you take new classes to bump that GPA up you are ADDING credit hours to the equation, thus why you need about 3 A's to neutralize one F. Repeating a class under grade forgiveness does not add credit hours.

On the subject of Japan... if you have any drug issues or smoke heavily you better ditch that before going there. Smoking in public areas is heavily fined in Japan (up to $100 first offense, $500 second offense in same month, third offense can get you into legal trouble & since you'd be under a school program you might lose be kicked out of it).

and thats just for tobbacco. If you're caught with weed or stronger stuff in Japan you're quite screwed. Its instant jail time (you dont even get to be before a judge for this one) and deportation after your sentence is served...followed by being put on black list and never allowed back in Japan. They're really tough on this stuff so don't bother going if you cant kick the habit before going there.

When did the subject of smoking and drugs pop into the picture? I don't use drugs and I was actually in Japan 4 months ago and I was smoking in public in Sapporo a few times and they did nothing to me. This thread was supposed to be about my GPA. I know about the grade forgiveness system and it sucks because I really don't want to take fitness and beginning piano haha.

Thats why I bring it up. I didn't stop at Sapporo but in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and several other cities I visited 2 years ago there was police stopping people (all foreigners) smoking outside and fining them nearly 100 bucks for the infraction. My sister was fined the 2nd day we were there XD .

You have the answer to your GPA question too :)

Crap. This site does not take into account +/- counting in the GPA. At my school, it does.

It did figure for me, though, that I need 43 credit hours (including this semester) of straight A's to get my GPA up to a 3.8 for high honors. (Regular honors is at 3.65, I'm at 3.648 right now with 56 credit hours.) This is if I do NOT do grade replacement, possible for 10 credit hours (3 of which are a C+, the other 7 are B's.)

Fortunately, I know how to figure these kinds of things myself. I should create an Excel spreadsheet capable of figuring +/- and grade replacement just like I've done for the grades I'm getting in my current classes.
