Okay, this is sort of rant-ish. I am a ninth grader here in Taiwan, prepping for the basic competence test for high school entrance, and is aspiring to enter the best high school for girls there is. Of course I should work hard. But...
Here's my schedule, starting from Jan 21

Mon to fri. Wake up at half past six, school ends at nine pm. Go home, study till midnight.
Sat. School to five pm, meet up for two hours with math professor for advanced material
Sun. Cram school all the way from eight am to five pm. Go home, study till midnight.

What do you think of my life?
As an aspie, how would you like it? Comparing to your current schedule? 8O

whoa, I heard school in Asia was much harder. No way in hell would I want that schedule. But at least you guys are waay smarter then we are in the states. There is a reason for that. More schooling and better discipline. I'm kinda glad I was born and raised in the states.

On average Asian students do not have a significantly higher iq, but yes we work our asses off every day. Discipline... I don't think the schools actually are responsible for that, it's the parents. However one good thing about western education is that it leaves the student space to roam. In our system creativity is often killed, although it's getting slightly better. Here's a link about Taiwanese education.

your school sounds rough.
see if theres any other options.
if not try to make the best of your situaton.
is it just this school or every school in tawian?
do they do homeschooling there?
see if your parents understand.

This is the norm in Taiwan, you can read the link i posted.
And although I am talking bad about the system, my grades are pretty good. I scored in the ninety ninth percentile range last time we took a mock exam for 150000 students all over Taiwan. I am driven by an intense need to succeed and come out as the best. I've got big plans for the future, yet I still think the system is awfully wrong. The bct will be canceled in 2014,though, and I hope it'll liberate some kids.

I think I've seen some sources say that the average IQ for Asian students is a good bit higher than american students, but those sources may not be reliable.
The thing about education in the states is that it's possible to get by without putting forth too much effort, but you can always fill up your schedule if you're motivated. This will help set you apart, and hopefully lead to success but not always. Since you scored 99th percentile it sounds like you could have eased up on the work if you wanted to. I've been as busy as you for a few weeks in a row before, but my schedule was never so regimented as that. I would get burnt out.

I took the math subject GRE (a standardized test for students looking to get into math grad school) a while ago and scored 80th percentile. I prepared maybe a total of 15 hours for the exam, and most of that 20% above me I know agonized over the test for at least a hundred hours. And a lot of them are Asian. The foreign students from east Asia and Russia are actually expected to do much better because they all endlessly drill the concepts that will show up in the exam. I just didn't think it was worth it when I could be doing something more useful with my time like research!

But I'm sure you're much better at memorizing and learning new concepts than me since you practice that all the time. So I'm a little jealous :)

Omg I'm sorry you have to do all that stupid work! In America, since you're the same grade as me, you would be in High School already and you would never have to work as hard. I wish I was rich so I could give you money to be my classmate, but no, I'm just middle class. :'(

My grades are pretty good, even by Taiwanese standards, I am just trying to convince myself that it's worth itXD
And yeah, I went to calif for a summer or so in fifth grade, I went to school there so I know what american schools are like. I think that the work is pretty easy, but more creative thinking is required. I think that I should try to apply for college and med school there if I get the chance.
It isn't so bad now, it's like settling into a routine. I go to bed each night exhausted but looking forward to each new day.

I'm in college and my schedule is not nearly this bad. Unless you are one of those Aspies who obsess over school, I wouldn't be able to do it.

Do you even have some sort of life? I mean some high school students in Asian countries have some sort of social life in between their school sessions.

I use my recesses well, and sneak time between tasks. Heh, that's plenty. How else would I be able to get to 500 posts? I use my spare time:)

Well, to me, it seems insane. But then again, math scores for students your age in the Republic of China rank in the top-5 internationally. The United States doesn't even crack the top 25 countries on that list. So it does seem to be working.
