I am planning to return to school after a hiatus of several decades and I can recall having a lot of trouble taking good notes (executive functioning issues!) I wonder if anyone has any good advice for note taking technique and general study practice?

If the teacher writes it down, you write it down. Copy everything that they put on the board. If they use slides, copy those (if they aren't made available to you electronically that is). Make sure to copy all example problems/solutions in detail.

If the teacher doesn't write anything on the board, they probably aren't a good teacher (My worst teachers by far have always been the ones that just talk without writing on the board)

You can use a tape recorder if he doesn't mind, or you can explain the situation to the teacher and ask him to ask for volunteers to copy their notes for you. There were two girls in my daughters college class this year who needed help with that and she volunteered and just copied hers at the end of the day and gave them to her. She doesn't know why the girl needed it and she never asked.
