I just started university, so this stuff is all new to me. When the lecture theatre is mostly full, with spare seats scattered randomly throughout the theatre, what is the NT custom for filling them up? Go to the front row and don't bother anyone, sit in a populated row but leave polite gaps between you and strangers? Deliberately sit next to a stranger and introduce yourself?

I sit at the front because I answer and ask a lot of questions, and get involved with many discussions, and I actually go to class to pay attention and learn.
The professor is also more likely to know who you are if you sit in the front. Call it playing teacher's pet if you like - but I plan to apply for Graduate school and I need professors on my side

As for where to sit if there are only a few seats available, just don't sit near people who look like they don't want their 'personal space' invaded.. i.e those who put their bags on the seat beside them or something, or they seem rather sprawled out (like myself - I have long legs and hate it when I have people on both sides of me).

Or like, get to class earlier so this is no longer a problem

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I do tend to go towards the front, and I have haerd that the lecturer is usually 'fonder' of students who they actually see. At the university I go to, the theatre fills in the same way as does the classroom - an anti-bowl of empty seats forms around the teacher/lecturer, as though the aim of the game was to sit as far from them as possible. What's the problem? They're there to give you information, not eat you.

Anyway, thank you for your detailed reply. :)

People are more concerned with being perceived as 'cool' by their peers than getting a good education and having professors know who they are.

I generally sit near the front as it's easier to pay attention and there's less likely to be people near you talking. I also try to leave a seat's space between me and other people already in the lecture as I like having free space next to me. I don't like it when the lecture hall is only barely big enough to fit everyone forcing people to cram together.
