Greetings, my fellow strangers. I wish to ask you fine people on the subject of these "extra-special" classes. And I'm not talking about the gifted programs. No sir, the kinds of "classes" that I'm talking about are the ones where you either get treated like some stupid idiot, or a ticking time-bomb. During Junior High, (and a little bit right now, in High School) I've had to endure this stupidity many a time, but not nearly as bad as my sister did (and still does, in regards to extracurricular activities, such as clubs, school events, etc). They didn't even let her join clubs, or sit with her friends because "those are your old friends, and they just need a break from you". Instead, they made her sit with her new "friends", segregated away from the normal populous, in a nice, shady quad exclusively designated to the disabled.

Rant aside, I do understand the need for developing necessary skills to cope with the social world, and I also understand that these special ed classes are supposed to help you with that. However, from what I've seen, the special ed teachers haven't been doing their jobs. They're just content to let things go on as they are, and constrict their students environment to their benefit.

If you disagree with any of my statements, please, comment on that as well in a constructive manner, and I will be happy to read and consider them.

Oh my gosh, I agree with you so much! In 7th grade, I was wrongly placed with a horrible special education teacher I didn't even need. She was the academic resource teacher, but there was nowhere else to put me. Therefore, I was stuck playing computer games the whole time or doing another menial task, since she was only focused on the other kids. She did/said a lot of pretty mean things, too.

One time, she actually said to me, "Today would be a nice day for a fire drill." WHAT KIND OF PERSON WILL SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO A KID WITH ASD! That tortured me all day.

During the school play, I was having back pains from sitting down the bulk of the time. My mom made me a makeshift pillow, but my teacher told my family it would "single me out". So she made me get a desk, which singled me out even more!

Finally, she got mad at me for being scared of an upcoming fire drill.

Fortunately, my parents didn't like her, so I got moved to a different program. Things are a lot better now, but I still have some issues.

I kept getting placed in them for years. The ones at my school were for the lazy kids who faked having ADD/ADHD and just used it as an excuse to be lazy. All we did in that class was "remedial lessons" that taught the other kids how to take notes and other skill sets that they learned a long time ago. I was the only one passing that class, so I was removed from their curriculum after my first semester in high school. Now I just have strictly general ed classes.

That doesn't stop the special ed teachers from stalking me, but they have no reason to.

I did, during most of elementary school and middle school. After high school, I was put in normal classes, for the most part.

5th grade was the only year I wasn't in special ed. In my new school I went to from 7th grade and up, it was called the resource room and I think some kids were lazy just because they were in special ed and thought they didn't need to do the work and my aid would tell them "No you need to do it, you are behind and have to do these assignments." I even remember being in 8th grade and I would help fold up all these letters and put them in envelopes for the teacher to mail off to the parents regarding their kid not doing their school work.

I got put in a 'special class' because I told the educators that I had AS. Otherwise they would've thought I was NT.

Big mistake, everyone treats you differently once you're in there.

I got the resource room in 3rd grade. It actually turned out to be a blessing. I got one on one help, and away from the trouble makers.

Oh my gosh, they stalk you too? It's always so freaking creepy when they sneak up on you like that. Why, I would be having this nice, perfect, stress-free day, when all of a sudden, some old creepo who I don't even know comes up behind me and says, "How are you feeling?" complete with a "sweet" saccharine voice that'll melt your heart...literally. How the heck do you think I feel, what with people spying on me? You don't just sneak up on people that you don't even know. If I were to do that, then I would be sent to the school shrink in the blink of an eye. Of course, it's perfectly okay for a complete stranger to do that to me. They know better than ol' crazy me anyhow, despite the fact that I've got more brains in my pinkie than they've got in their entire body. Typical...

Again, sorry for the rant, and thank you for your perspective! It's always nice to know that you're not the only one out there.

There was one time when I actually got a good special ed teacher. Her name was Jill Johnson. It was during kindergarten when I was put into her class. I was having serious problems with "learning how to fail". You see, whenever something I did wasn't exactly, infinitesimally perfect, I would have this big, giant panic attack. This made me the freakazoid of my class, unfortunately, which only added to the problem. Eventually, I was sent to the resource room with Mrs. Johnson, who helped me out a lot when it came to my perfectionism. She set up all kinds of behavior plans to better my coping skills, and if I hadn't gone there, I don't think I would be able to deal with the social world today. I also made really good friends in there, some of which I still see today.

I spent about 3 or 4 years in those kinds of programs because I was having trouble in school...even though it wasn't because I was dumb.

For Math, mostly. But at one point, English and Reading...

The 'special class' where typically called lower sets here, I was mixxed around with English classes certantly since the age of 11 to 16. When I was 12, I was put into an extremely low set class, sharing classes with whom cant read or spell at their age, it was a class that I excelled in though. At age 14 though, the school put me in the top set which was a complete disaster.

Maths where not as mixed starting at a lower set, then moving and staying at the middle set.

First off, I hope you're not the "ticking time-bomb" type.

I've been there. 4th grade, I refused to take their "special test" seriously, because I knew it wasn't for grade credit, and I ended up next door in a cramped little space reading Jack and Jill again. It was humiliating, but only lasted for a week or two.

The year wasn't a complete bust though. I rallied and got elected to class office.

I started going to special classes in addition to regular classes in sixth grade and from then on I was only in special all day classes in normal school or special schools (including going to school in the outpatient ward of a mental hospital) until I was 16 and quit school.

I was only for preschool for NOS. I remember even today the day I read a 3rd grade book in kindergarten when my parents and my teacher were shocked I was at such a high level. I was one of the smartest people in my class (highest GPA of any guy in graduating class). I was in TAG for a couple years but that's completely different than what you mention.

I was in a few special classes when I was younger. The other students in the special classes that I was placed in were about as functioning as I was and we usually used those classes to do school work. A number of us were autistic and would be given social skills lessons sometimes, but that was pretty rare.
