I left my backpack in the library today. So in math class i was going to get it. Good idea, right? WRONG. The teacher saw me on return to class and said i wasn't allowed to leave class without an adult. Well I said that was the dumbest thing I ever heard, because I kind of lost my temper there. I'm like OMG, why do you expect me to ACT like an adult, when you don't TREAT me like an adult!?!?!?

Sounds like it might be a school policy.

You're 12 and you can't leave the classroom without an adult??

I don't know anything about school policies where you live, but when I was in elementary school we left to go fetch things or go to the school dentist or WC or to have a sip of water on our own.

That sounds extreme!

You are not allowed to leave the classroom during a class (except in some situations).

Is the library inside or outside the school?

rules have to be obeyed even when they are completely stupid because one time someone even more stupid did something to warrant them being made and ever since, everyone has had to pay for his or her stupidity

I don't know why would a student need to be with an adult to leave a classroom.
I'm sure there is an explanation of that situation (teacher lied, teacher was mistaken, teacher doesn't like you, teacher misunderstood you, you misunderstood the teacher's answer, your school is not "normal" [e.g. very insecure], etc.)

Unfortunately this. There are many thing that I have to do, or not do because there are either formal rules or society rules.

Sorry to hear of your experience. I dislike being confronted for something that I innocently did wrong because I did not know the rules. It can make me quite angry.

I'm with nebrets and neobluex - life is full of what I consider stupid rules to protect stupid people from doing stupid things.

One of my favorite TV episodes is Edina Mansoon on Absolutely Fabulous where she proposes a Stupid Tax for such cases. :)
