As the title says. Ive heard that because academia is a small world the opinion of your head of departmentr can make or break you. I desperately want to become a lecturer as the uni environment is the only one where I can function properly. Im a born academic, I couldnt function in a studio or a classroom

Why not change from one university to another, judging by your age you are too young to have the experience required to be a university teacher.

If you are in the sciences then you will need a PhD and some postdoc experience, if you are not in the sciences then a PhD traditionally is less important for the first post as a university teacher.

What I would advise you to do if you are in the sciences is to look for a person who would be willing to take you on as a PhD student, this will be a great stepping stone towards a university teaching post. Also how do you know you have upset the head of department, I will tell you as a university prof that we seniors have experienced life as students while students have not experienced life as seniors. The typical head of department is very busy with lots of big things.

The chances unless you have done something outstanding (either good or bad) the head of department will not spend much time thinking about you, so I would not worry that you have "marked your card" with the head of department.

Im doing music. I scored 90% on one of my essays without attending a single class so I suppose im proficient. My attendance is >30% because I struggle with self care and leaving the house in general. I also have the social ability of an aspie so ive probably upset him in numerous other ways. I stand out also because im seen as an unmitigated freak

Perhaps you should try to attend classs more often. It may allow your professor to get to know you better, and that may get you on better terms. If not, then it will still give you more of the interaction and outside skills that would be useful in lecturing.

Response is appreciated but my poor attendance is not a choice.. Around my peers I maintain the lie that im lazy because its preferable to the alternative. When I do go to classes I absolutely adore the sense of structure the routine and the subject material. In fact my OCD tends to become more and more severe the longer I stay indoors. This however still isnt incentive enough. Most days the thought of going out feels like scaling Everest. Theres fear and anxiety and another emotion im not qquite sure how to quantify. Exhaustion perhaps I dont know

Not to be mean, but I think your first and foremost priority needs to be working on overcoming the issues contributing to your poor attendance.

As a lecturer, you will be expected to attend classes. Now of course you do get time off, but a 30% attendance rate will get you fired.

So I'd suggest working on those issues now, so that if you do get a chance to lecture, you won't loose it.

Now to your post; the academic world is small, but not everyone is buddy buddy. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
