Accelerated Writing course: Teachers way of doing things new
I am currently taking a Writing II accelerated college course as part of requirements to get my Associated of Science degree in Health Information Technology. I am struggling with it, because the teacher wants things done a more stricter or pickier way than am used to, anyone else ever struggled with a teacher who wants things done a certain way and is not accepting of a way that seems similar but different on essays? When I took Writing I, I had a teacher who didn't care how we wrote stuff just as long as the grammar and punctuation and citations and stuff were there, this class is driving me nuts. I am taking 4 other classes but am not having problems with those because those classes give you more explanations on what you are supposed to do, the directions this teacher gives don't seem that easy to understand, I really hope I can get at least a C in the course, but am not used to getting that because have been a straight A student in all of my college courses including the other 4 am taking now in my college career, which spans 6 years including a degree in medical transcription.
Your instructor may be introducing a specific and more advanced skills set based on highly structured or possibly even templated methods. These techniques help a student to create clear, concise and well structured explanations, arguments and presentations of material. It is not unusual for a lower level course to ignore these aspects of writing. Such rules based writing programs are designed to help a student approach a variety of subjects with a set of general rules that have wide applications possibilities - and even though they can be a pain to master, they are immensely useful in the long run.
Go to your teacher and explain the specific problems you are having with the new material. If the teacher is not able to give directions that you can understand and follow, then seek out your instructor from last semester and ask for assistance. I mention this, on the off chance you may have a fundamental communications style issue with your new teacher and your old teacher might be of help. Also, does your English department have a list of tutoring options?
Sometimes it pays to 'know when to fold 'em" - If none of the above works and you are able to drop the course without penalty - it might be better to withdraw gracefully now and pick it up again next semester with a different instructor...(this is better than a fail or a poor grade).
