Can someone move this to the school and college forum? I accidentally posted it here.

Hell, yes! I hate the smoke alarm going off, too. Makes me turn into Rainwoman! :D

I still get a little scared of them. But those in my dorms have been better. Not a buzzer but a slightly quieter 60's era siren.
Smoke detectors are worse during a power outage. All silent until random beeps that sound like a computer dying. Even worse during the night.

No. It first scared me when I was in pre school. It was really loud and then I got used to it so it wasn't as loud when it was before. I knew the routine when it goes off, get up and get in line and we all go outside and stand around. Kids in my class all seemed to take it well, same as when I was six and seven when I was in special ed full time. But there was this one girl in my class who would cover her ears and start crying.

the fear I feel is that I will do something foolish while I try to get away from the sound!

No more than any other loud sudden sound (so not that much) but the louder ones do hurt my ears a bit.

Its actually too sudden and loud for me to respond in any way at all. I jump like hell for most things, but not that.

"...huh? Oh." is basically my repsonse.

Even the phone makes me flinch. When there is a fire drill scheduled at my son's school the principal will come and get him out of class. He will hold her hand with one hand and put his hand on a nearby doorknob with the other while she pulls the alarm. I think for some it's the noise level and for some it's more the sudden noise. He was bothered by the class bell ringing but got past it by figuring out the exact second the bell would ring. He's the only kid I know that wants to watch the needle go in when he gets a shot.

I don't really mind alarms.

I actually kind of like the noise. :P And I don't get panicky, I know exactly what to do, and it's probably just a drill anyway.

I got used to it over time, especially in high school when the fire alarms would often go off like twice a week.

I as well have generally been afraid of fire alarms, but I am blessed with a school where the fire alarms come on gradually (yes, going from nothing to full strength in 500 milliseconds is gradual), they're actually rather melodic ("bee doo-lee doo-lee...", at a consonant interval, not a squealing or anything like that), and, odd as it may seem, there are no fire alarms in the classrooms, only in the halls.

Not anymore... I no longer have any qualms about covering my ears. (I've got only mild sensory sensitivity, so that works fine.) My high school has a ridiculously loud fire alarm, even by the other students' standards. I once left my ears uncovered for a few seconds while following the class down the stairs, and had a pounding migraine by the end of the school day. I don't know how the faculty and other students can stand it and haven't begun to show hearing damage yet. :x
