And... parents are mentioned one way or another in the news when they talk about it. Well, of course, why not... not like anyone can actually go to a university all on their own in this 'who one knows' not 'what one knows' world...

The vast majority of people get into college on their own merits -- I certainly did, as did pretty much everybody I know. Grades + SAT scores + stupid personal statements are the basis on which U.S. colleges grant admission.

Like me, most of my high school friends were first generation Americans with parents who'd arrived in the U.S. as child refugees in the 1950s. The power/influence/money required for legacy admission wasn't exactly something my parents had the ability to work in my favor.

Full A-Levels are actually considered equivalent to the first two years of college in the US. After a person completes the A-levels with at least three passes, that person usually goes to University for three years to obtain a Bachelor's.

The GCSE O-levels are actually considered equivalent to 11-12th grade exams.
