I have heard people do that where I am. I have never quite understood it.

It seems to have become one of the most used and most stupid phrases of the 21st century.

Gay is just a word. It has been distorted to have more than one meaning. It could mean homosexual, or it could have other connotations.

There's not a lot of sense behind it, as to why gay is considered a reasonable word to use as a negative adjective. Don't expect it to suddenly change, or people to suddenly change, once they are in college.

If the word bothers you, if you have friends that use it, tell them. And tell them why. As friends they should be able to appreciate your reasons, and respect your feelings. At the least they should be able to if nothing else try and refrain from using it around you.

For other people, there's not much you can do about it. Just be aware that not everyone that uses that word in that way has a problem with homosexuality. I've been guilty of using it myself at times.

i have no clue where this saying came from and i hate how they're taking the true definition of gay and turning it into something horrid.

gay-happy; cheerful

has gay always meant relating to the same sex, as well?

I find the word EXTREMELY offensive when used to describe something or someone "bad".

In the past few years, how often have you heard someone use it in that sense in casual conversation? That definition of the word is a bit dated, and isn't used much any more, at least in my experience.

well, i go to school teenagers, so not often.

i wonder how gay became such a negative statement. first, it was happy, then homosexual, and now it's plummeted down to meaning something horrible. hmm...*looks up*

that should clear somethings up...hopefully nobody has altered the articles.

Started off positive, then was a term regarding homosexuality.

Homosexuality for quite some time was viewed in a negative light.

"Negative" topic, negative term, so people started to use it in a derogatory sense for more than just sexuality.

Stigma surrounding homosexuality has decreased, though not gone away. The negative meaning of the word has faded a bit for specifically homosexuality, though can still be made negative in context.

Negative use not regarding homosexuality still persists.

yes, i know that people still use gay when referring to homosexuals. i have this problem with forgetting bits of information to conclude my statement.

I recently came across a very humorous comic strip which dealt with this issue.

I say let it pass, it's just another stupid fad word that kids throw around like wildfire for a few years and then suddenly stop repeating. When was the last time you heard something called a "bummer" or a "total drag?" Noone uses those terms anymore. For now everything's gay and ret*d, and in a few years everything will be something different. As long as people are stupid this will keep happening.

I think the reason is that "inbred" hasn't caught on

"Dude, I flunked my test..."
"That's so inbred!"

I have, but only in a song my Mum sings to my brother.
