I'm probably the worst dorm resident ever...I complain constantly about noise (I'm VERY sensitive to it) and before I had realized it was Asperger's I felt like just a jerk who was making a big deal out of something other people obviously don't get fussed about. Small noises, too, like someone walking across the walkway to their room or a car honking its horn once or twice in the parking lot. I try not to be a dick about it but I've called the police about 4 or 5 times this year (about 3 times that for the RAs) for various noises, just because they are incredibly disturbing to me. Anyone else feel like they're sucking the fun out of college?

Don't worry about it. You do whatever you feel is best for you and don't worry about what others think. Anyway, in principal, you are there to learn, not have fun.

I've had the same problem in my dorms. I wear earplugs every night and can still hear sounds. After I privately discussed with my neighbor across the hall and my neighbor next door the noise coming from their rooms, they have been very courteous in regard to the noise. However, down the hall in the so-called Study Room, a group that plays poker is very loud and noisy, often late at night until 3AM. I called the front desk to complain about it, and the person at the desk sounded like he wanted to cut me off! Unfortunately, the problem was not dealt with. I'm only going to be living in the dorms for a few more weeks, and then I'll be living at home again. I haven't called the police yet. It's just not a problem I have time to pursue further at this time. (And sad it is that there should even be this problem when there are rules about sound in place according to the housing department website's FAQ.)

Of course, most people in college are there to have fun AND learn. They could have fun more quietly, though!

If ear plugs don't bother you, try that route. I had a similar problem when I was living in a dorm. My roommate never had class before 11:00, so he would stay up late and use his computer. By late, I mean 3:00 A.M. or later. Stuff like minesweeper or solitaire. The mouse clicks got so annoying that I yelled at him to turn the damn thing off. He did, and acted apologetic, if not a little scared, but like most things he later acted like it was funny and gave me crap about it. Thankfully have lived in a one-person apartment after that year up until now. Don't plan on living with others again unless it is due to a relationship.

Actually I don't live with others at all, I've had been in 3 rooms with 2 roommates in my first 3 months of college alone before quickly establishing that I can NEVER LIVE WITH ANOTHER HUMAN BEING. (My mother attributes this to "single child syndrome". I just realised it is AS.) Big kudos to you for pulling it off, though, those 2 months of sharing a living space were the most horrible months of my life, to be honest.

I have done the ear plugs, in fact I would wear them all day long and through the night (at the time I told myself it was because I didn't want to overhear the stupid conversations around campus, before realizing that it was just too much noise, all the time.) I had to stop though, because I was taking a sign language class and I didn't know if my (deaf) professor would think I was mocking her in some weird experiment. Also because even though I tried to hide it, when I discreetly took the ear plugs out I could tell people thought I was strange.
