Ever feel like you're the only one in class...
Who's actually passionate about the subject? I love bonus lectures on the details of something we just discussed and don't consider them "boring", but I get the impression that's how a lot of people feel. The only conversations classmates have attempted with me have been about completely unrelated things like video games or the boys in class.
I think most of their eyes would glaze over if I tried to talk to them about further reading I did outside of class.

Depends on the subject. I'm not a math or science person, but I am an English/History person. That is just how my brain is wired. If the subject is something I find interesting, then I love learning about the details of the subject. Sometimes a subject that may have not interested me before I may really get into after a while, like a political science class I took at community college. I guess it really depends on how motivated and determined a student is to do well if they are fully involved with the course.
As for the conversation subjects, it may just be a grade they are after as apposed to that and learning about the subject and that's why they talk about unrelated things. Some may just not want to think about it outside of class. If you aren't really into the conversation then just reply with simple or neutral answers until you get a reason to leave it. Never talked about boys so I can't help you there.

I didn't care for history overall, but, I did love my High School teacher, Mr. Jackson (one of the few whose name I can remember). He had loads of great stories that helped put the dry bits into perspective.
When we were talking about WWI and WWII, we even got to play some trivia games about people, places and artistic works of the times (yes, there were some questions about the Hobbit in there, as we'd heard stories about Tolkein and his mates).
I actually got some guff about it from some fellow (older than me) students when I went back to Uni. My history professor there had had an interesting upbringing as the child of an archeologist, and had traveled the world from a young age. We got onto a few side-discussions about etymology. It was FASCINATING stuff, but, it had the benefit of making some of the other things we spoke about more understandable.
Yeah, they started interrupting and saying how boring it was. Rude, and irritated the teacher, who was understandably happy to have an engaged student. (btw, in that class, the 'boy' those ladies talked about was actually our teacher, which might explain, in some roundabout way, why they lashed out at me.)
I also had philosophy with these same students. They would get bored when I, and another student, would discuss with the professor some fiction that illustrated the concepts we were learning about (mostly dystopian literature and some sci-fi).
They clearly didn't know what they were missing. Fascinating stuff, and great to be learning it at the hands of a person who could explain and refine. I am all about teaching myself, but, some things are just better with some guidance.
A note about myself, I'm FAR more of an applied sciences type of girl. Hands on, doing stuff, so, I've always disliked the memorizing and listening and discussing classes, because there is no answer, per se. But, even someone like me can be passionate about those subjects with additional context.
