Being a post-doc simply means that you are working in a lab setting under the supervision of a higher-up person with a doctorate. It isn't a type of degree or education. It's just the next step after getting your Ph.D. You still aren't on the same "level" as most academics; once you put in two or so years as a post-doc, still following others' orders, you finally get to run your own experiments and such.
