Autism Group at Uni?
Hi guys,
I'm thinking of starting a group for people on the spectrum, at my college. I've already spoken to employees of the college and the idea is gaining ground. However, I am just one person and I know my preferences but I'd like to hear about yours as well. For example, we are considering how to get the word out, about the group.
My questions are: If you were in college, were self or formally diagnosed and saw a poster for a group for those on the spectrum, would you go? Or would you prefer to be invited by word of mouth (a teacher, the student success center, a counselor etc)?
Would you be interested in attending such a group-since it is very straight-forward about who it is for and that all the attendees are on the spectrum?
Next, how would you like the environment of the actual group to be? What would you need to be in the meeting room in order to feel safe/welcomed/comfortable?
What would you want to be discussed at such a group? Examples: coping strategies for making the transition from high school to college, making friends, dealing with isolation, general life issues- not related to college.
Any other ideas or specific pointers would be helpful- whether it's advice about what to do, what not to do or even pointers from other people who have started groups.

I have, and would again.
I heared of such a group trough my counceler, since it wasn't a student group, but just a general one in the same area.
The group i went to was low-investment; starting with a movie, usually, with some kind of autism theme, and then just drinks with some board and card games available to have something to do.
One thing i'd recommend though: allow NTs to join as well, enabling them to get first-hand experiences and answers to questions, the groups i went to allowed this and several NTs joined for that very reason.

I am in one at my University. It's not very big at the moment with a total of four members including me, but I really enjoy getting to know and meet other people on the spectrum. I found out about it via word of mouth from the woman that runs the disability services at my school. I think that might be a better method of spreading the word in case some don't want it openly known they are autistic.
