Anyone done this before? I understand it's more common for non-American PhD's to come to the U.S. to do postdocs rather than the reverse... but I'm finishing up my PhD and though there are some good research groups in my area (epidemiology) in the U.S., there are also some in universities in western Europe and Australia that fit my research interests. Ofcourse, they would have to have funding to support me, but it would keep my options more open if I didn't just look at places in this country. Fortunately, most of the places that interest me are in countries where I can get by knowing only English and French, but there's ofcourse all issues with moving and visas and low postdoc pay and adapting to a new culture, etc..

My son-in-law (HFA) has done it twice - once in Germany and once in Vancouver. Both have invited him back for another trip when he can fit it in. He is an electrical engineer and HOD at his own university. He really enjoyed it and also spent a sabbatical - six months teaching at the Max Planck Institute. He has had permanent offers from those institutions since though he wants his children to grow up here - and so do I! One of his ASD gifts is that if he likes a topic he has to find out everything about it - EVERYTHING! - and in his field, that's been a bonus.
