So, any suggestions. I really need to get proficient before I take intermediate Spanish this fall.

I have the most problems with verbs and general grammar, and everything else...

I do have a full set of rosetta stone spanish programs, but I find them terribly dull and tedious. I was thinking of getting a subscription to News in slow Spanish. I thought it might make things a bit more interesting.

So, does anybody know of any free game-based online Spanish learner's resources, or anything else that might make this easier?

Did you take the beginner course awhile ago? Maybe look around for any refresher courses offered by schools/orgs/library or ask a professor in your program if you could sit in on a few classes over the summer to build a stronger foundation before you dive into the intermediate course. Personally, when I go to local Spanish-speaking eateries, I practice my Spanish there with the cashier when he/she's not busy. It's all about practice, right? You could also watch Spanish shows and movies with the subtitles on.

I have a book to recommend to you that might be helpful. It's called Easy Spanish Reader: A Three-Part Text for Beginning Students. It starts off with some simple stories with grammar from a first year Spanish class and becomes increasingly more difficult as you go through the text. It ends with an abridged version of Lazarillo de Tormes, a classic Spanish text. I found it very helpful a few months ago as I changed from being a biology major to being a Spanish major after almost three years of not taking in Spanish. It's a good book to review with, but I have also heard friends say it was helpful as they were learning the grammar for the first time as well.
