Write a question on a blank piece of paper, study a different subject for 15 minutes or so, and then come back and see if you can answer the question. Maybe just five phrases, say the five causes of WWI.

This is a more active method of studying than simply reviewing your notes. And I do very much recommend experimenting. For example, my preferred intellectual style is story/narrative thinking, such as the case study method in business school. Your preferred style might be abstract thinking or visual thinking.

This is a method that might work for some people.

For me, i am best with associative recall; having knowledge just "jump" to mind on cue when it is needed, like during a pop/pub quiz, but not even knowing i have this knowledge beforehand
