Hello,

Are there any college or career counseling services that I could work with to try and decide if I should go back to college (and what field to focus on)? For a number of reasons, the job I’ve had for the last four years hasn’t worked for me. My dissatisfaction with it is to the point that I’d prefer to simply start fresh in an entirely different field rather than risk running into the same issues again. Unfortunately, I’m not really sure how to go about this for a number of reasons…

-Aside from being HFA / Aspie (my diagnosis was only a few months ago – I’m not actually sure where I fall on the scale), I’m also visually impaired. The biggest takeaway from this is that there are a number of tasks I cannot perform (specifically driving). (The current job has presented issues relating to both of these. It’s actually the reason I sought psychiatric diagnosis in the first place.)

-I’m simply not sure what I want to do. I’ve had interests in Japan and the Japanese language, but I’m not sure what this could be applied to. I’m considering computer science currently, but that’s mostly in hopes that a computer science job wouldn’t present me with many disability issues. At this point I simply don't have anything I'm actively genuinely interested in pursuing.

-I’m not sure what type of college program I should be looking at. I have a BS in mechanical engineering, so most people I’ve spoken with have said that I should look into graduate school. Unfortunately, people have also said not to go to graduate school unless I have a fairly clear idea of what I want to do (which I don’t). I’m not sure whether a 2nd bachelors or an associate’s degree is worth pursuing at this point.

-I’ve typically done very well in school and college. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in my degree, and never really had any significant issues with any classes or coursework.

The overall concern is that, if I choose the wrong career focus or college program, I’ll ultimately wind up in the same – or possibly worse – position that I find myself in right now. That being said, I’m not really sure what career counseling services I should be looking into to try and get some guidance for this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you
