(To be absolutely precise , I did do some half-assed going to college ~ but not " the full thing " in experience , or education anyway .)
Last night , I walked in my heavy backpack , trying to get to Goodwill to try and get some cheap sweatpants , for some sort of better pants on ~ Well , I got to thinking ~ again ~ about how I never truly got to " go to college " , never getting the full-fledged " normal " residential college experience , and how it seems unlikely now ~ it's about my only attainable hope .
I'm tearing now as I write this ~ It's about the only hope I have t , possibly , transition to a post-homeless life ~ I'm only decades older than the " typical " 18-yr old , I just never had it .
I think about people trying to deny it to me ~ ~ actually , a person in the Seattle area who I thought was going to help me try and get my nessecary HS records is showing every indication of kicking me to the side , not following through , there's one WP friend of mine who will know who this other person is
Maybe no one wil lhelp me . And I will be found dead , another homeless bum , some morning .

This is one of those threads were I wish I could do something of help....but I know next to nothing about how to track down old HS records since I went to college after highschool so I had all that info available. I dropped out though for various reasons I won't derail the thread with all that.

Maybe a college could help with that....some may have resources to help applicants track down high school records and such I know they sometimes help with applying for loans and all that sort of stuff, but not really sure on getting the records. Either way sounds like a really hard situation to be in.

FAFSA and all the transcripts they want is basically undoable on your own, I hate it. It has caused me so much stress these last few months, it's probably moved my hairline back an inch lol. You can try www.parchment.com for transcripts, I assume graduated quite awhile ago so I don't know how that would work but it was recommended to me when I was trying to get mine. They really shouldn't require a HS transcript from you, it's silly as you've lived several lifetimes since then. It's a community college not Harvard!

Being back in school, I've really that it is the older students that are actually friendliest and most helpful to know since we're there for business and have lived life long enough to want it for ourselves not just because our parents said so or whatever. We have the advantage, I look at these 18 year olds and so many of them are just completely lost as I was when originally went to college and being able to help people gives me confidence. There are of older folks in my classes, there are a lot from other countries, don't sweat not having the "normal" college experience whatever that means, living in a dorm never appealed to me that's for sure. It's been tough but I'm not stupid and I can do the work(at least everything except math), medication has helped and I've survived the first 5 weeks. I wish other things would get better but it's about developing positive momentum more than anything than just sitting and rotting.

What are you thinking studying?

If you went to college, you may be even worse off (no job and lots of debt). College is extremely overrated anyway.

Your problem is that you've been "programmed" to see value in a particular experience, and you have been made to feel inadequate because you didn't have it. You have to break that programming because it's used to control each and every one of us at various points in our lives.

If you went now, you should psychologically prepare yourself for a practical end game. It's not about the experience, it's about improving your life. Over the years, I've gone to school with many people way older than you, who are trying to go back in time and correct some fork in the road. They try too hard and don't get the right things out of it.

I don't think it's a bad thing to go back to school at your age, but I would do something like a two year technical college that helps you get a job at the end. Electrician, x-ray tech, LPN, something like that.

The/a Mods here say that " people are complaining " about my marking threads so I can go back them...maybe I'll get tossed off .
Frankly , I am old enough that " a mass of debt " wouldn't matter very much ~ Maybe I'll just die (This is not meant to suggest suicide , just look at my age .) and the government can kiss my dead *ss trying to get it back , as I have said before .
I feel that uni time is really the only way to satisfy myself , and set up the possibility , anyway , of having a more-than-SSDI income , " winning a game show " concepts aside .
As for tech , I am not against " doing something that is practical-that you can get hired at " - along with something else .
Really , what do you want me to want ? I want it SO MUCH (really crying now)...

Im really sorry you feel that way. I happen to agree with those that say college is overrrated, but that doesn't help you. As you obviously feel you've missed out on something.

Are you more upset at missing out on the social experiences of college, or the idea that you'd be in a better financial/life situation? Or maybe do you have a generalized feeling of being lesser because you don't have a degree?

I've known people who've loved college and always want to go back, and others who hated it. Some who were successful because of it, and others who got absolutely nothing out of it than a piece of paper.

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but is it really that hard to get HS records? What happens when you contacted your HS? Do they only have records going back so far? Where do they archive their records? Maybe the central board of education building in the city you went to school? Maybe hall of records or something?

I think it's ridiculous you should even need them at this point. If you are that far removed from HS, what's the chances any of that is still usable to you now anyway? I can't remember s**t from HS and that was 20 years ago.

For terminology here , I will refer to the " standard " , four-year , residential , college I desire as " uni " , an Australian term for it .
This should not be taken as , likewise , that , just as I am not refusing to Study Something Practical That Will Get You A Job ! (SSPGAJ) - at least as a minor/additional - I am not saying " I won't go to Community College/comparable ! " .
I came back to SF in part because I thought I'd try to go the San Francisco Community College as a stepping stone - Get practice , " pay your dues " , get credits up , " prove you deserve to go away to college " (as my mother told me when I was 18- ) , Triple-A , out-of-town , the out-of-town , pre-Broadway ,
tryout - check . Okay ? That said ?
However , it , briefly , seems that would be harder than expected , even in part because it seems they won't have another term til' Spring 2016 (I came thinking maybe I could go to Fall 2015 , it appears they don't do a Winter term) - more later .

I do realize many here tend to feel " college was no good " - Well , in a different era , I didn't get it ~ and I've wanted it all my adult life , really . Basically , I want the cliches .

i'm 40 yrs. out of high school. this year i needed my h. s. transcripts. all it took was a phone call to let the school know where i wanted the transcripts sent.

Nobody else could get your transcripts for you, unless that person has a notarized letter from you authorizing this.

transcripts aren't that big of a deal, don't give up before you even start, be glad you're over 23 or else you would of needed to do all this tax garbage from your parents. Was a nightmare for my brother, still trying to get it processed,.

You can better yourself and all those life experiences you've had will just make school that much easier and I think you'd be surprised at people you might meet. There are a lot of folks out there in the same boat as us, I notice tons of people I think are on the spectrum at school. If you can get a 2 year degree then you can get into a 4 year school, you could transfer right into a bachelors program even.

...I did send that person a signed faxed letter , KK , (All that she said was needed , not notarized .) , she hasn't followed it up .
Even now that summer's COMPLETELY over , and any possible " It's closed til' after Labor Day " is over , she has not replied to post-LD missives ! !! !! !! !!

spring semester starts in January, its not too far away

registration for spring classes starts on the 5th at my school

transcripts really aren't a big deal, if the high school you went to is still standing you can actually just call them directly or you can call the school district

there are outside services that can get it too like parchment.com as I mentioned
