Im just wondering, has anyone here ever, or even considered giving up ( or severely limiting) their own internet surfing/usage?

I have only fairly recently. Idk about all of you but I have found that my most significant challenges in school were exacerbated by recreational internet usage. It is quite appealing (all the world's info/ vices at your fingertips) and unlike say television, exercise, or reading books, it doesn't really quite have a logical beginning, ending, or breaking point. With the internet, it's basically stream of consciousness entertainment.

One thing I've found helpful is to sort of find new vices, vices apart from net usage if Im doing school. It seems almost anything is better than recreational internet usage.

This might sound a bit preachy, but my suggestion is to find other ways to relax/decompress if your in school and college, other ways than internet. Read a book, listen to music, and only use it for actual, specific curiosities and other functions.

I've found that after giving it up for a while (or finding other hobbies/habits) work gets done much easier, and I just feel better over all.

If you're in high school or college ( or in any form of schooling) I can almost guarantee that within one month of giving up (or significantly limiting internet/media usage) you're school performance will get better by 50-60%.

Has anyone tried this, or does anyone know where Im coming from? Let me know!

How you spend your time on the computer determines whether it is a waste of time or an investment.

Have done so when I was too busy to go on-line due to working weeks of up to 100 hours of productivity.

I bolded & highlighted in red as to the real reason why your computer/Internet-usage was unproductive.

Some people still spend all of their time recreationally playing traditional board-games. Discipline.

Well if we're talking about ways for relaxing, then yes, something like meditation has more benefit.

Some of us have work that revolves around Internet-advertising and marketing... ;o

School-performance has more to do with whether you have put focus/attention on the homework.
Some people will still not bother to do their homework or studying even if they get off the Internet.

Priorities are certainly important activities to prioritise. For the record, not to be a Word-Corrections-Nazi or anything, you have "you're" in places where it should be "your" and vice-versa. The most-effective method I have found for sticking to a productive routine is to first have everything ultra-organised, then set up the plan in a similar manner to an assembly line, such as how you go from one activity to the next in a manufacturing ware-house, even going so far as to set up alarms for each and every single important activity or groups of activities to be done at certain times of the day if necessary. This works best when one can consistently regulate their sleep-habits to follow an actual 24-hour-cycle

^ You are correct of course. Thanks for the corrections, I sometimes forget to distinguish my "your" from "you're".
Whatever works man. An assembly line sure sounds like a nice idea.

Absolutely I was talking about only recreational net usage, not internet stuff for work or school assignments. In my experience, internet usage such as WOW, youtube, games etc, tend to eat into time in a way other recreational activities do not.

Books, and even tv, in my experience aren't... quite the same thing. I really believe that. I almost think that "aspies" 20-30 years ago had it easier in some ways. Life was much harder on them in a lot of ways, but seems there were fewer distractions to exacerbate the ADD symptoms of aspergers (which seem to be present in most everyone I know with the syndrome... including yours truly)

Of course, the drive to do the homework must be there for it to be done.

I mean, I think this is good advice generally, to anyone really.

The internet is addicting in that it is far more addicting and offers far more freedom (too much).

Light such as from computer or phone or tv screens causes the bodies brain to block Melatonin production, the chemical that informs us it is night time and encourages us to want to sleep.

The internet and computers also strongly activate our Dopamine reward system.

The internet also offers far too much freedom, especially if you are on an unlimited data plan.

With tv you could only watch a specific show you liked when it was on, now you can find it and basically watch it anytime, anywhere.

With books, you let your imagination run wild free, but you are still more constricted as you are consuming a pre-created product.

Video games are more mentally and physically fatiguing as computer screens are more still, static and motionless aside from the occasional ad or changing webpages, but video games have faster paced and constantly moving action.

Video games require mental concentration, hand-eye co-ordination, quick-timing skills for faster games, physical dexterity and hand/arm movements so it exhausts one far more quicker than simply sitting still behind a computer typing.

I can be quite physical when playing fast-paced games, even bouncing in my seat and getting out of my seat and other such movements.

I agree with you OP on limiting internet usage more.

The only websites I actually go on are WP and randomly surfing the net, nothing useful or productive, occasionally researching university choices or local meetups/events. And, of course, facebook for socialization/current event purposes.

Though I'd still use the computer even if I had no internet as I use a program to create electronic music offline.

Not the internet per se -- it's useful. But considering giving up specifically things like message boards -- HELL YES. The more I see of other people's stupidity (most of the time anyway) the more I wonder why I'm engaging in an of it.

I gave it up to study for the Bar ( am taking it in one month)

I use net now for personal issues, homework ,or specific inquiries.

Not for leisure or "surfing". I instead read and watch tv instead.

You're right, so I recommend using something that changes the colors at night. I started using an app called Twilight and it changes the colors to a more red/orange scale than blue. I've been falling asleep easier and sleeping better since I started using it. There's equivalents for computers too.

As for giving up the internet I disagree - I actually do a lot of reading with it, and it's how I interact with people much of the time. I also use it to keep myself up to date with current events, and use learning apps and for research for my writing. I also use it for word games :D.

The internet has way too many uses imo, it's about self control. I am just as guilty as anyone else of binging on crap on the internet (I've lost hours on TVTropes and AO3), but since I utilize it for a number of important things, I disagree. I know when to buckle down and use it for what I need to be using it for.

If you're addicted you have to ask yourself if you're using it as escapism, like I used to do with the internet, books, and video games. I mean I still do to some degree, but I mean constantly using it for that to avoid what is bothering you.
