I just finished my math homework and it has me in tears. I feel so stupid. Im in a Math class that is specifically for students with IEPs. Im behind in the class. My class moved on to a new unit and Im still on the last unit. I get extra help during and after school. My special ed math teacher helped me today and I almost started crying in front of her. My goal was to get to at least a grade 9 level this year. Im still at a grade 7-8 level. My brother who is good at math, tries to help but I get frustrated.

I’m sorry you get frustrated.

Many liberal arts degrees don’t require too much math.

What about the math problems are causing you issues?

I have a math learning disabiliity that makes math very very difficult. I try my best. Then I have communication difficulties which makes it really hard to ask for help.

I'm sorry for your tears. I have been there, perhaps we all have. I like math but I am no whiz at it. I find when I try to explain my reasoning to someone they have no clue what I talking about but hey , copy paste or post a problem here. Maybe from our combined alternative way of thinking and doing we can help?

Yeah. I think it would be a good idea to copy and paste it. The only issue is that I am a verbal learner. When I am learning a new concept, my teacher tells me each step and writes it down. Im in a class with 2 teachers. I seem to get the most help in that class.

I can't help or give advice, but boy do I relate! I've been so frustrated and felt so dumb that I cried in math class once
the rest of the time I tended to suffer in silence, so bored and frustrated that I just wanted to escape my own skin

I know how you feel, I have dyscalculia. It makes me feel intellectually disabled. It totally sucks.

I'm also largely a verbal learner.

What if you do a problem, switch gears where you read a little history or literature, that is, something that's also going to help you in school. And then you come back and do the same problem again, kind of like you might watch a particularly good movie a second time ? ?

Essentially, you'd be doing fewer problems but doing them more thoroughly. And if it works, maybe the school authorities could get used to the idea and include it in your IEP.

Yeah. That seems like a great idea. Its summer now though. I can do it next year though. All it says on my IEP is that I have to improve my math skills in some way.

I feel your struggle. I was diagnosed with dyscalculia as a 10 year old and at 17 I was so far behind in math that they threatened to kick me out of school, I had not been getting the proper extra help for 3 years so it wasn't my fault but I was devastated. If you're really far behind don't you think you could discuss with your principal to get extra time for math studying? They could do that for me to the point where I had almost only math for a while and no other subjects and it helped a lot.

If your brother can help you that's great too. Try to focus when he helps you and don't get frustrated, use your frustration as a motivator instead. One fun thing i'd do when doing maths to help motivate me was to count how many problems i'd solved in my math book each class, write it down and then try to solve more next time. That worked for me and made it a little more fun. Maybe you could find something like that too. And look around online on websites that provide help for math and look at how they explain the problem solving, find what clicks with you and makes you understand faster and then write those methods down. It can even be fun to learn math... If you find a way to make it interesting. I hope everything works out for you, I know how difficult it is.
