I am taking two courses this fall and I am taking and English and Anthropology. I like them both a lot but I am struggling with Anthropology in terms of reading comprehension. I never seem to pick up the important stuff for a certain chapter and I have failed 3 out of 4 quizzes now. My aunt gave me some tips that she think might help. Does anyone here with AS have any ideas about how I may tackle this sort of thing?

Hello Miyah- I also have a problem with reading and writing since my ACT scores were ony 19 in those subjects and in the 30's for Math and Science.

I read very slowly(Like 3-4 minutes per page) so its often very time consuming for me.

I suggest you develop a method of taking notes after you have read a chapter, or better yet after every 5 or 10 pages. It will help you reinforce what you have learned.

What I use to do is get a pen and write down the main points after every 10-15 pages, it got me an A in the history class Freshman year and an A in Psychology. Simutaneously I would highlite all the major parts or dialogues that the author was trying to point out. For example in a history book I would highlight all the black words and all the parts that referred to all the dates.

That may be over-doing things a little bit, but you can always use Wikipedia or the Internet if you feel like being lazy and it will give you a summary of each chapter :).

Don't be afraid to read a page twice if you don't quite understand what the author is trying to say, I have done it multiple times.

Another thing- Don't think or feel stupid just because you are not good with the readng comprehension, I'm dead horrible at it because I ignore most of it and only pay attention to one thing. Regardless, I still do better than most of my peeris inschool, its all about the effort that you put into it.

If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me. My sister has a reaing comprehension disability but she is not AS.
