Changing schools
I like the school I'm going to, but the town it's located in (Wichita Falls, Texas) is causing me quite a bit of distress.
The reason being: I am socially and politically liberal, and Wichita Falls is very conservative.
I am wondering if it's worth it to transfer to another college, or if I should stay here and tough it out.

Well, I have moved like 5 different schools in the past 6 years so I know how it is like......
The only reason why I would move to a different school is because I got into a better school.
Ironically, that is what happened to me like 5 times in a row.
If it is really to the point where you cannot have a meaningful conversation with people on campus, then I would say move.
Although I don't understand what is so bad about a conservative school? I am very conservative and I would love a school that wasn't liberal .
Yeah, I guess what I would ask would be what is so bad about the conservative part? Do students who go there wear uniforms and bring the bible to class? Or am I missing something completely?
Our son is having the exact same problem.
From a parental perspective, we are trying to convince him to tough it out because:
1) the school he is attending is well thought of
2) the school he is attending is relatively inexpensive
3) if he transfers to another school, some problems he currently has may be solved, but he will probably run into other types of problems
If your school is inexpensive, or particularly good in the area you are majoring in, I would stick it out.

Ever seen the movie Footloose? Wichita Falls is a lot like the town in that movie, except much larger.

I am only attending MSU (Midwestern State University) because I couldn't afford to go to the University of Washington.

This wretched hive of scum and villainy? Don't come back to Houston. If you're looking for a more liberal atmosphere, try Austin. I've only been a couple of times, but it just "felt" better than Houston does.

UT Austin would cost $40,000 total--and that's in-state tuition. In fact, that is more expensive that some schools in other states (specifically Idaho, Montana, and South Dakota--places that are just as conservative, if not more so, than Texas). Plus it's difficult to get into UT Austin. And the cost of living in Austin is quite high.
I should have never chosen a college based on its academics. I should have chosen one based on the prospects of finding single, liberal Aspie women to date. There aren't even any in the Metroplex or Oklahoma City (the two nearest metro area to my school).
And no one would be willing to do a long-distance relationship.

But doesn't that defeat the purpose of college? I am a very single-minded person; I can do one thing very well but I'm a poor multi-tasker. If you're like me, maybe you should make academics your number-one priority so you can get a good job and a good quality of life, so the dating scene, though separate, is that much more accessible afterwards. Plus, wouldn't there be many more factors other than political viewpoints that effect dating? The girls at my school seem disinterested in me regardless of their politics.
Not that I'm in any position to offer a suggestion in this matter, I have never had a girlfriend and I could be doing much better academically, but I know that school's stressful enough without having to worry about social problems...

I am doing well academically. In fact, I probably have a 4.0 GPA at the moment. But my social situation is hurting me, and there are no liberal, Aspie women where I am. And nobody is willing to do a long-distance relationship. The nearest AS support group is over 100 miles away, and even then, there may not be any single women at the meetings.

While there's nothing wrong with having standards in terms of seeking a partner for a relationship, restrictions could do more harm than good. At one point I had some restrictions that I thought made perfect sense. It took one incredible person to make me realize that those restrictions didn't matter nearly as much as I had thought. Is looking for someone that is a liberal and an aspie likely to improve the chance of compatibility? It might, but there's always exceptions to any rule, you could wind up meeting a woman that was both NT and more towards conservative that wound up being perfect for you, and you for her.
In terms of location...well... within Texas, Austin is the only place I know of with any sort of liberal populace. I know that UT is there, but I don't know if there are any smaller universities nearby. They may not be all that well-known, might be worth checking out if you haven't already. Major cities will be better choices than smaller ones, simply because there are more people, and the chance for diversity is higher. If none of that really works, my recommendation would be to leave this nation-state, and go either North or West...or both. You'd have to go pretty far North if you were to also go East. With that kind of GPA, it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to transfer.
The other issue is that you are going to a relatively small school. With it being small, and mostly conservative, those that are closer to liberal could either be good at hiding, or at concealing their views. If you decide to stick with where you are at, you may just have to try and track them down. You could always ask one of the more stereotypical conservatives there where the "bad" or "stupid" people hang out, so you can "avoid" them, and then use that as directions for where you do want to go to find people you are more compatible with.
If you aren't feeling your best, in terms of social fulfillment, romantic fulfillment, physical wellness, or really any sense of the word, then it will be harder to do your best.

Many people who have the same interests as me are either atheists or agnostics (I happen to be Lutheran--but Lutherans don't really enforce God's laws--in fact, they ordain gay and lesbian pastors now). My favorite TV show is South Park, and I feel that sex outside of marriage is ok.
I am not going to get any fulfillment from a South Park-hating Baptist who wants a lengthy courtship.

Would you be willing to take out loans to go to Washington......Washington is a good school?
And I find that many people with AS had a bad time finding jobs because they concentrated too much on getting a high GPA and not enough on getting connections.
A high GPA really only matters if you want to get into medical school or something like that. As long as you get over a 3.0GPA you should do fine. I know there are a lot of set situations that people say XXXX Firm will not hire a worker unless they got over a 3.5GPA in College but I am honestly starting to doubt the honesty of such statements.
Getting a connection is 100 times more important than your GPA. You will see people that will find an employer a year or so before they graduate and the employer won't really care as long as they graduate.....
I know I am completely 100% off track on this also, it must be an AS trait to complete ignore the original topic and go about talking about what I think is important....

I limit myself to other Aspies because they are the only people desperate enough to date me. NT women don't want me because of my school-related unemployment, and because I am too fat. If I were between the ages of 18-23, I could have met people in college. I will be 28 in December, and 18-23 year olds don't want to date people much older than them, unless they're rich. And people close to my age won't date me because I am not making any money and I am not physically attractive enough.
And many people who have the same interests as me are either atheists or agnostics (I happen to be Lutheran--but Lutherans don't really enforce God's laws--in fact, they ordain gay and lesbian pastors now). My favorite TV show is South Park, and I feel that sex outside of marriage is ok.

Then, if you think that looks are the problem- Go to the gym and walk/run. I love to run over every summer and I find that it is a great way of relieving stress......and you are alone too so you don;t have people bothering you. And the other runners are rather friendly also.....easy people to start a conversation with.
It looks like you are in a tight financial situation so loans are out of the picture....I wish I could help you but I am a student in College and I have started to make the 6 digit salary I am going for.
Also, I feel that Aspies don't lie or cheat.
Also, I was worried that by mentioning being socially liberal, people would think I was just looking for sex--when that is not true at all. There is the political aspect of it as well.
Tim
