We exchanged rough drafts of our English papers today. When I got mine back, there was one phrase written all over my paper; "Awkward Wording." I've always had this problem, my writing makes perfect sense to me but it's difficult for everyone else to understand. I don't know how to make my writing make sense to everyone else. Could this be from my AS?

Yep. One word: Idiosyncratic.

I get it all the time, but hey, as long as it makes sense to you...who cares?

Well, that's the thing. I may end up failing because of this. I wouldn't care if I could pass.

Then fake it. It sucks to have to do so, but this world is far from being hospitable to our differences, so just give them what you think they want.

I'm not sure I understand it. What do you mean with "Awkward Wording"?

All he said was the way I say things was weird.

I wouldn't assign too much value to a peer review, especially if the individual couldn't elaborate on his criticism beyond "awkward wording". Sounds like a fucken idiot.

I know limitations like this aren't limited to aspies.

Take this awkward critique up with the Dean.

I'm told I'm excessively verbose and use rather complicated and convoluted sentences...

"awkward wording" can maybe include vague words (sometimes, someone, something, problems, issues, solutions, etc), words that don't fit well together, run-on sentences, places that should use a semicolon/dash/comma but don't, etc. I guess I can't really think of anything else.

If I were you, I would ask for a more elaborate and reasoned criticism before writing the next paper. I would need to know what is wrong with my writing before changing it. That is, IF there's anything wrong, of course. Weird is not the same as wrong.

I often have problems such as this, not so much in writing, since I read through anything I write and change it if it sounds awkward, but in conversation, I always seem to choose words that make little sense, it is hard to explain what I want to say to people.

I understand what you mean. My own 'awkward' way of wording things has improved in English significantly from middle school, but when translating into/learning other languages, I seem to follow patterns considered awkward in those languages as well. (French, Japanese, etc.)

I can't think of an example off the top of my head, otherwise I'd post it...

Eh, I guess I shouldn't let that guys opinions worry me. He is "supposed" to be one the best in the class and he is always involved in class discussions but I think he is just trying to kiss the instructor's ass.
