Today, I met with my 4 lab partners to work on an assignment for a Fluid Dynamics class. Each of us had his/her own textbook.
After we had all worked a few hours, lab partners A and B leave. Suddenly I realize that my textbook is missing.
I see a textbook next to partner C, who is working at the computer. I am tempted to discretely take it, put it in my backpack, and leave. The rationale would be that someone did the same thing to me, and I'm just altering who the victim is.
Instead, I refrain from my evil impulses, and ask partners C and D if they have packed my book by mistake. They both say no. I leave.
Later at home, I send an email to all of them, asking about my book. I just got a call from partner A, telling me that she has my book, but not her own. The book that I thought was C's, was instead A's book.
If you still follow me, my point is this: If I had "stolen" the book, then we (the group) would still be in possession of it, and it would have worked out best for all of us.
That's just a little moral paradox I thought I'd share with you.
(There's still a possibility that C or D grabbed it on their way out.)
