Getting a job is one of the only options.

I don't really believe in free money from the government as alot of people don't deserve it.

You might be able to pull it off, but I would get a job.

Should those of us who do deserve it qualify then?

I went to uni as a mature student after 18 months out of work. I got a small grant and student loans - it was tight but by working long hours during the holidays we scraped by. Without it I would have been unable to go, which hardly seems fair - education should be a right, not determined by your economic status.

And those who do, usually don't see a penny from the Govt. in their lives.

I worked my way through college while having a fulltime job as a web designer in the late 90's (I went to college at night, and the job was fortunately close to it). I think I spent double the time a "normal" student does on getting my degree, but that was the only way to go - never have had a wealthy, parental cushion to depend on, and I think in the end that was just right - helps you build character.

Christ, I wouldn't be at college if it wasn't for the benefit system. I might not be alive if it wasn't for state benefits. I seem like your slightly quirky, awkard average Jo. This makes it hard for people to believe I need to be signed off sick from work long-term.

Trying to fit myself into a number of other people's schedules makes me go potty. Dealing with stressful situations, having to multitask constantly, there being a total lack of actual routine. Aagh!

At college the tutors understand I freak out occasionally - they allow me to just leave and go home when I need to. I can't imagine an employer being happy with that.

Anyway, my point was, many of us who live on benefits do so for the sake of our mental health. Only the person experiencing the emotions can jusge how best to keep themselves healthy, and we just have to trust that people will make the right decisions. We're not all dole-bludging scum, even if mass media paints us that way.

It took me $9000 USD in loans and 5 years to earn my B.S. Computer Engineering.

During the last 2 years I lived in my lab on campus and took showers at the gym.

My frugal and hardworking years in college taught me a valuable lesson.

I now live at a nice office where I work on design projects of my choice.

Until I strike gold I will continue to live off of savings that will last 2 years.

i tried that but the student job employers want experience and seems to only employ women and i had to quit full-time college and go to a different one part-time.

As an undergrad, I had several scholarships that paid for most of my expenses. I also worked during the summers.

Now, I depend on student loans.

Um, question: are we talking about paying for college AND for food??

Since, I would think if one cannot do both, FAFSA (College Federal Aid) is readily available. Which is the only way I am in college with 12hours/semester and feeding myself. Granted, with Stanford Loans etc, they must be paid back usually, but this is little compared to paying ENTIRE semester's tuition at once out of pocket.

What discrimination in student jobs? I did not see any when I went to school.

When I was in college oh-so-many years ago, I had a work-study job. I tutored other students. I was the only female tutor. I'm pretty sure it wasn't sexist, just the male/female ratio of students in my area of study.

My nephew is in college now and got a job via the student center. He's male.

You might be at the wrong college for you if you feel it is sexist.

Huh, really? Thats strange. I got hired on the day I applied.

This worked twice. At two different colleges. With effectively no experience whatsoever. Maybe I'm just lucky.

If it weren't for federal aid I'd probably not be in college right now.
