Accepted to University
Hey, I recently got accepted to University to study English. To be honest, I am -really- nervous. I want to eventually become an English teacher, but I have a hard enough time in school as it is. I hate to think that I get special treatment for having aspergers. I do get good grades (for the most part), and go to regular classes outside of my class that is for peeps with AS. I dunno if I can handle the homework, though; I haven't actually done any homework for close to five years because I always did it during a spare. Can anyone give me some advice?
not really. i tried uni twice, duxed some of my subjects, did well academically in some things, and ended up failing others because of non-attendance due to executive dysfunction and also sensory problems.
in the end i dropped out both times and i have never been bac.
I cannot fit into any externally imposed routines and have now constructed a life around my main special interest.
good luck and i hope some people with more positive experiences can offer good advice and support.
I'm in my last year now. In my case, homework is pretty much non existant. The things you do in your spare time is background reading to keep up with what your learning, so you are prepared for exams and know enough to tackle essays, and of course the essays themselves. I've always had a problem with homework when I saw no purpose attached to it, but in university you organise your own work out of lectures and each bit counts towards your overall grade. Not sure if its the same with your course.
A fair number of people have similar problems with the work load, so to make it assessable I find they start of fairly slow, giving you a fair amount of guidance in the first year of what kind of thengs you are expected to do. Then it steps up in second and third years.
I tend to get copys of the all important books the lecturers refer to, but only the very important ones, and get the other reading material out of the library to make notes on. Its not as difficult as it seems at first once you get into the swing of things.
