I lived in the dorms my first year of college, and I will be living in the dorms next year. Then the campus stops guaranteeing on-campus housing and I have to move off-campus after 2 years.
I have had a terrible time with the dorms, because of my roommates. I was barely there, because my roommates are both VERY NT and are horrible to me. They like to look through my stuff and kick me when I'm down. So I never had a place to escape to. I made 2 friends on my floor of about 100 people. I lived in a double room that was refurbished to be a triple. Next year I am living in a single. That way I will be able to meet people and survive the dorm, but also have a space where I can shut the door and just be alone. If you can, I recommend getting a single room, because you have NO idea how important that alone time will be. I can't do any work in my dorm room, so I leave it at 7:45 am, and don't get back until 9:15 pm. I do work at a student center all day. Then I come home, and my roommates always have lots of people doing lots of loud obnoxious things. I feel like if I had a chance to have picked my roommates specifically, I would've been better off, because I could live with people who accept me and accept that I am quiet and don't talk about myself all the time, and that I don't like gossip, etc. Some of you will get lucky with roommates, but remember, that if you get woken up at 1:30 in the morning hearing voices to hear your roommates telling each other all sorts of things about yourself that you never knew, there is a problem.
Anyhow, for me, I had to live in the dorms, because I went far away for school. (New England to California). It's not a bad thing, it's great to be on campus and have that space without having to worry about transportation. Just aim to see if you can get yourself some "me-space".
wow, I wrote an essay... sorry...
