I am an adult who has Asperger's. I also teach kids with autism.

I would like a perspective from children/young adults on a question of mine.

Does anyone here use PECS? How was it taught to you and at what age? What advice would you give adults teaching it?

My Asperger's isnt' really typical but if anyone wants to ask me anything, go ahead. I might answer in a PM, depending on the question.

Not me.
With Aspies, I don't see why we would need it unless there was a non-autism-related trauma that occurred (such as a stroke later in life... things like that.) After all, the main difference between people with AS and people with HFA is the fact that we Aspies develop speech normally, despite the fact that our usage of it may be atypical. Despite this, we don't regress linguistically. That's why it's so annoying to see these people like Temple Grandin saying that they have "Asperger's." She couldn't talk until she was way past the normal age.

But I (slightly) digress.

I haven't seen too many people with Autistic Disorder, not AS, in this subforum. I'm not saying there aren't any; perhaps something like that doesn't even mean anything coming from me, someone who rarely comes around this subforum. Most of the "LFA" (don't agree with that term, which is why it's in quotation marks) people or people who can't speak well have been adults, and they usually hang around the General Autism Discussion subforum.

If we're smart enough to type this then we're smart enough to talk. I've never used PECs

my friend uses pecs. rather, his teachers tried to teach him pecs. i think it is more beneficial to him to spend the extra time to help him with speech therapy, also i am showing him how to type by writing a journal on microsoft word. learning to type or to speak even if it isnt full sentences is better than pecs.
