Never really been able to see the appeal of religion, myself. I mean, sure, they're generally frameworks to view the world through that purport to make sense, and by publicly affirming an allegiance to one there's various forms of social cachet or being able to hook into group resources, but if you don't really feel a pressing need for any of that, religion tends to lose a lot of its shine. It's just one more human psychological pattern that matches poorly to the physical world.

I voted 'Other' in the poll - I'm best described as part Atheist, part Agnostic, and part Buddhist advocate.

I don't even know anymore. I was raised Christian, but a lot of it never made sense to me. They always pray to Jesus, and I always just skipped straight to the Big G Himself.

I believe in Jesus Christ of the Father/Son/Holy Spirit trinity, but am presently not aligned with any specific human-created religion/denomination.

Some of that not being aligned is based in theological things and some of it is on account of a constellation of health problems which make attending churches, or any large grouping, a bit of a problem.

None!
Not only am I an Atheist, I am an Antitheist and deem religion one of the greatest dangers and threats to humanity and human history as well as the news prove me right. Every single human right had and has to be fought for against religious organisations and their followers.

I think that we need to vigorously oppose religious dogma and ideology wherever we encounter it.

But a maniac without a gun is still a maniac?
Dangerous people who use religion as a scapegoat are still dangerous people.
I have had plenty of religious people in my life, and almost none of them were nutbags.
A lot of them actually do very good things for others. But on the other hand, I know some atheists who do good, as well.

A maniac without a gun is far less dangerous than a maniac with a gun.

I like to pretend I'm Buddhist. In keeping with the farce, I clicked "Buddhist".

That's true. I think the problem that gets ignored sometimes though is that there are worse weapons.

Exactly. In the past ten years or so, there have been an awful lot of maniacs who drove trucks into crowds, and sometimes got out, and started stabbing people with knives.

I don't think I'd feel particularly safe if a maniac was wielding an axe. Or a chainsaw. Or a crossbow. Or a length of chain. Or a box cutter. Or a baseball bat. Or a board with rusty nails in it. Or if they simply had their bare hands wrapped around my throat.

Whoa that got dark. I only meant it metaphorically... :)

I mean, removing religion doesn't really change all that much. Not automatically, at least.
