Davis, California (It rocks here!)
I live in Oregon now, but I grew up in Fairfield, California (not far from you). I remember Davis as being a very bicycle-friendly town from way back.
My oldest sister went to U.C. Davis in the 1960s and had a friend at the time who smuggled one of the famous radioactive beagles out of the lab. Experiments were done on irradiating pregnant beagle mommies to see the effect on the puppies. This one appeared normal and was apparently supposed to be put down. Instead, I got her as a pet when I was six years old. She lived fourteen years but got cancer really bad in her later years and I had to put her down in 1980.
Daiquiri the Radioactive Beagle is world famous now decades after her death. A Sacramento newspaper featured her in a story a couple years ago, and the City of Davis wiki page links to her page from their urban legends section.
Say, the fictional Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider that gave him his superpowers as Spiderman. The real life Bicycling Guitarist (me) had a radioactive beagle as a childhood pet for fourteen years. I wonder sometimes...
