The place you could grow old...

Provincial/ small town
Not so loud and not so polluted as a huge city but you can still do your shopping without making it a whole day trip.

i would like to live the rest of my years in an environment like iceland with the reindeer.

like Kiriae said though, not one three-shack grouping of a village, but a small town although i would not mind a drive to get groceries and such. gotta take in dat scenery.

Big city. Dealing with people in small towns is horrible. Plus I can't drive.

I quite like big cities, prefereably at night on a rainy summer night. It's not too cold, the wet streets reflect the lights, including neon signs and such... and there's a moderate amount of traffic.

Yeah, that's what I prefer. I kinda get bored in this place here, where you can walk around for an hour and run into a single car... which 9 out of 10 times is a patrol car that will stop and ask for you ID, lol. It's apparently a weird sight to actually see people walking around at night here...

A provincial/small town neighborhood, kind of like where I am at now. I also like the peacefulness of the nearby forest and lake, and taking walks there is enjoyable for me.

oh neat, that's what i like best about big cities as well.. i live in a town of 85,000, we've just gotten a bit of showers (we're in a drought now), despite the town size i would have loved to go on an evening walk down the main street, my myself or with someone, can't imagine who. thanks for the description.

(a winter night would do just as well.) but only a night, probably not if it's a day and there's just as much bustle.

I lived in a small town till I moved in with my girlfriend & I felt trapped there cuz I cant drive & there was no public transportation & I would of had to go to the nearby cities to get to anything. So my vote is for Metropole.

Big city with good transportation, including Amtrak. Then I could just take a Taxi to the Train station and get out of town for a while if I want to.

Otherwise, take taxis, elevated trains, or subways to all the main city sites like cafes or parks.

i have sweet memories of amtrak. as a kid, we used to take the surfliner couple of times a year 100 miles south to fullerton, when we would visit my grandma. we would visit the cafe often too, always on the lower level of a car. strange, every single time we took the train, we would be seated on the upper levels. always the upper levels, never lower. we would be sat at union station in LA for about 45 minutes, just waiting.
i do like your idea, VIDEODROME, of just getting out of town on the amtrak, i've wanted to do that for a while, to leave for a weekend or something but i've been busy. someday!

i've never seen an elevated train. only in movies or tv. california would never let that happen.

i went to culver city a year ago, and got lost there for a bit, but, that was the most pleasant lost experience i've had! very artsy city, we went there for the art. i do not mind wandering in a suburban, almost industrial-ish looking environment like culver city.

mountains and foothills provide a scenic backdrop to my town. lots of the more wealthy people live on those foothills, early at night when the lights in their homes are on and it's dark out, i can imagine that they are actually skyscrapers, in the near distance.

I guess for where I am it can be considered rural isolation. 3 villages around me, 3 km, 6 km and 7 km away. Average distance between villages in my part of Belgium is around 10-15 km. I'm between cows and corn. There is no railway station and a bus needs to be booked at least 2 hours before.
The day will come I don't drive no more though. And I'm too far to do shopping on one of those OAP motorised thingies so will probably head for a small town eventually. Preferably by the sea. I like the sea because the air is fresher.

A peaceful small town

my old middle school is only a couple hundred yards from my front door. that was a nice little commute.

it is, salty and brisk. i really like that air, but just the air. if i had a chance to live far inland, on a lightly forested hill, but where the air was like that of the seashore, i would gladly take it.

I like big or average-sized cities. There's something about the feel of walking down city streets that I love. Everything feels so cool and trendy, and there's all these people going about their lives. I love the look of city lights at night.

But I also like the country. My grandparents used to live on a rural farm, and I loved it there. Everything was so peaceful and pretty.

Small town or village, with plenty of trees and undeveloped land, nowhere near a freeway or a highway. Just me, my wife, a few neighbors, some house cats, my ham radio gear, good food, good water, and lots of free time.

Pluses and minuses about several of these...

...but I picked rural isolation. It's easier to go to the city and then get away than it is to live in the city and THEN get away.
