Hi I'm new here, but I just kinda need to vent, so here goes:

I finished school last june, and since then I've been sitting at home doing nothing. Then a couple of weeks ago, I finally got told that someone would help me get some sort of activity during the days.(For different reasons, I can't handle a "real" job.) So he takes me to check some things out. The first place is, or so I've been told, a place where people with different disorders can sew and do a bit of whatever they want. Turns out it's a workshop for, lack of a better word; ret*ds. My mother in law went with me as moral support, and she recognized several of the people there(she used to work at a "daycare" for mongoloids and the like). He tells me to think about it for a couple of weeks, and drives us home.

Yesterday, he took us to another place that he told us was mostly for people with aspergers or autism. When we go inside, we're greeted by 3 mongoloids. Turns out, this is exactly the same, except it's with painting instead of sewing. This time, I f-ing explode. I ask him what exactly he thinks aspergers syndrom is, he tells me he knows what it is and that he thought this was something that'd "suit me". I simply tell him to go to hell, and then I walk home.

My mother in law was with me this time too, and later that day she was on the phone with her friend who she also used to work with. Turns out her friend knows the person that's supposed to help me, not personally, but apparently they've worked at the same place or something like it. And she tells my mother in law, who then tells me, that this person never has worked with people like me, only "ret*ds".

The thing is, on the preliminary meeting, I specifically told him that I not, under any circumstances, wanted to be put together with that sort of people. And I wasn't unclear about it, I said, and I quote: "I don't want to lumped together with ret*ds, I want something as close as possible to a real job, preferably with animals"

And, that's it, basically. Sorry for the bad english by the way.

I'd request for another person who can "help" you out and address your needs properly. Something to think about might be volunteering at a local animal shelter.

good luck w. the cat shelter.

could you maybe handle a vet office?

what about walking dogs or pet sitting. you can advertise that yourself- work for yourself, maybe have a family member help as your 'secretary' if phones are a problem (they are for me).

Those "mongoloids" are people with Downs Syndrome, which greatly impairs brain function. Basically, the meaningless work stuff is just to keep them occupied because otherwise they'd just sit at home, watch cartoons all day, and rot. I went to my state's (USA) Department of Rehabilitation and ended up with one of the Downs Syndrome type jobs eventually. In fact, after a week they said I was too high functioning to work for them, so they gave me the URL of a job search website, showed me the door, and wished me luck. This nonprofit is the ONLY one under contract to handle Dept of Rehab cases in my area, so it's either the ret*d job or nothing.

It seems as if nonprofits that hire the disabled are mainly set up to provide jobs for extremely low functioning people, at least in the US. They have mongoloids assembling boxes and washing plastic shipping containers and stuff like that. If you're an aspie, they have no clue what to do with you. You can't get hired by normal employers, but are too high functioning to assemble boxes. You're sort of in the twilight zone.

what really ticks me off is that he told me that everyone got offered the same "jobs", no matter what handicap they have, but I still didn't see anyone at either place that wasn't a downie :x

When I got out of school, I got my first job (data entry) through a temp agency. Any decent temp agencies where you are?

I had a good friend who was ret*d. They're people too, and they get treated even worse than we do.

I also recommend a temp agency, as I gained a lot of experience doing data entry through one and it has allowed me to get the bookkeeping job I have.

Go for the job with animals! You can get to own a pets shop why not. There are lots of options!

visit www.entrepreneur.com

It's a free site. Browse the business ideas and read the descriptions. Then you can apply for job in any area you like. Or you can ask your mother in law some money to start your own business. You can breed dogs, or exotic animals. Just browse that site.

Good luck!

It's an accurate term. ret*d is a synonym for impaired. Research the root and history of the two terms and you will see what I mean.

Clearly they misunderstand, AS is not LF austism. Make them understand you at min. you want a job that has low amount of contact with the public. Driving a forklift, loading trucks etc . Maybe even a factory if can can find one. t Do not allow them to talk you in a fastfood hellhole type crap job, and you thought the workshop was bad ? Careful what else they might cook up for you.

I wish you wouldn't use the word ret*d (I was severely Autistic for most of my childhood), but I get your point.
I would be mad too! You seem really smart, so you deserve to find a good place to work :D
