WORK something we all need to discuss and feel the more we do the more we may help change some, hopefully many employees views!

My thoughts to get you started:
Autistic individuals often are not understood, but to me we have a brilliant resource, insight that others often do not understand, a worth of knowledge often under resourced. Others need to look behind our facades and tape into the wealth of often creative, different, outside the usually intellect and intelligence.

But far too often others discriminate, bully, hold at arm’s length, what a waste! Of course let’s not forget the majority of people with autism are completely undiagnosed, unrepresented in all statistics used to support resource allocation decision making, and are excluded from any realistic role in shaping public perception/identity (of people with ASDs), often represented by parents of children on the autism spectrum and at times so wrongly.

So many work issues arise for people on the autism spectrum because lack of real awareness and understanding. When allowed we can be brilliant workers, but not easy trying to live and be on everyone else’s terms, stressful and can be extremely exhausting, sadly I found out the hard way, at the expense of many things including my health.

We need work stations where we can function, we need to be allowed to socialize on our terms or not, we need not be victimizes for being different. We need to be accessed according to our varied needs…

Add your thought, ideas how we can change work situations for the better!

Not the best advice, in the past ive just made my workplaces (cubicle/workshop) somewhere people feel uncomfortable to enter, be it loose live wires or the health hazards present. As i said not advice but ive gained some understanding of my behavior through the forum.

There is nothing stopping any a--hole from putting on such a badge and doing bad things, then making people with AS take the blame because "that is what AS people do".

I think a huge part of it is confidence and not hating yourself everytime you make a mistake. Certainly from my point of view I've spent my whole life with everyone I meet trying to make me fit into something I can't, like a square peg in a round hole. It can really damage your self esteem and make you doubt yourself. I think theres two parts to the work problem with aspergers, one being your point of view with quite often a lot of baggage and halting a person with aspergers from standing their ground. The other is everyone else's point of view.

The word autism still brings up a lot of stereotypes, a lot of them negative as evidenced by the amount of people in recent adoption programes hearing the word and immediantly saying 'I couldn't cope with that'.

It might help if those with autism / aspergers in successful jobs got together to make a programme about the good things people with autism can bring to the work enviroment.

I agree and have to a point already, but as we are as deserve and different in a way there is no easy list, as someone said to me once everyone is able and everyone has challenges in life. But I do feel work environments could be changed a lot to meet our sensory needs etc..

Heh...good luck convincing the NT work world to make exceptions for us.

I know it's a cruel joke, but it's sadly true. Our issues dont mean jack s**t to them.

Working on that, but that's all each of us can do is speak out and help others understand and of course stick together, as eventually I feel we will all make a huge difference...

the alternative set up our own business and employ mainly ASD individuals, maybe time to turn the tables, mind you in some paces possibly already like that where computers involved etc... :alien:
